Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL
6.3. We've long been fans of the W108/109 chassis, supremely
well-built cars from the era when Daimler manufactured cars to a
standard, not a price. The "six point three" was one of the world's
first "sports sedans" and among the fastest four-door cars of its
era, with timeless style, comfort and performance that remain
relevant today.
The offered car was originally purchased in California by William
T. Orr, a producer and head of Warner Bros. television division
(who's fruitful partnership with ABC brought us Maverick and
F-Troop, among others). Clearly a man of impeccable taste in both
entertainment and automobiles, he ordered this car in code 396
Medium Blue Metallic over blue leather interior and opted for
European delivery. Mr. Orr undertook a comprehensive mechanical
overhaul in 1994, including a complete engine rebuild, after which
the car was retired from daily service and enjoyed as a nice
weather weekend driver until his passing in 2002. A subsequent
owner undertook further restoration work including a complete
repaint in the correct color in 2009 along with new door panels,
headliner, leather seat upholstery and interior wood trim.
The air suspension has been rebuilt twice, most recently in 2022
with new bellows and all valves rebuilt. Recent service within the
last year includes new door, trunk and sunroof seals, new heater
levers, rear axle service, rear brakes, a new drag link, driveshaft
flex disk, and a vacuum system service (all door locks and trunk
are working properly). A/C has been converted to R-134a and blows
cold. The original Becker Europa stereo works, as does the
Hirschmann power antenna.
Under the hood lies a fuel-injected overhead-cam 6.3 liter V8,
which starts easily and provides ample power throughout the rev
range; it's mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. An
impressive car then and now, it inspires confidence even at
triple-digit speeds.
Included with the sale are the original sales documents (including
European delivery paperwork, owner's manual and stamped service
book, jack, spare and tools, and decades of service records. For
