Vehicle Description
This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is the barn find that every
collector and restorer dreams of, and as they say, dreams do come
true! The history on this burgundy beauty goes like this. On August
4th, 1969, one James K. Johnson made the short drive from his home
in Oregon, Ohio(Who knew there was a town named Oregon in Ohio?)
west to Floyd Dugan Chevrolet in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. Johnson had his
mind on buying a brand-new Z/28 Camaro, and Floyd Dugan Chevrolet
just happened to have one, stock #1690. This Garnet Red muscle
machine was factory equipped with optional door edge guards
($4.25), black vinyl roof ($84.30), remote control door mirror
($10.55), console ($53.75), a 3.73 Positraction axle ($42.15),
power disc brakes ($64.25), close ratio 4-speed ($195.40), special
instrumentation ($94.80), AM radio ($61.10) and the Z/28
performance equipment at a hefty $522.40. All these options
($1,132.95 of them to be exact) added on top of the base Camaro
coupe price of $2,727 brought the grand total to $3,886.40
including a $26.45 destination charge. Mr. Johnson financed the car
through the General Motors Acceptance Corp. as noted on the
original title dated August 7th, of 1969, and took the car to his
home off Lallendorf road in Oregon, Ohio. What happened to Mr.
Johnson in the ensuing years is unfortunately lost to history, but
our Camaro turns up again around 2013 buried in a barn and
partially disassembled still in that small town in Ohio. The power
company had bought the land, and the barn was to be demolished, but
they needed someone to come get the car out. A local police officer
contacted a friend of his who was into old cars, and they went to
check it out. That's when the dream came true, as this wasn't any
old Camaro, this was an original Z/28 and with only 27,000 odd
miles on the odometer. Once the car was removed, not only was all
the original parts found in the barn with the car, but all the
paperwork was there also. The original window sticker, looking its
age, the warranty booklet and original protect-o-plate, owner's
manual still in the bag, accessories catalog, and the original and
aforementioned Memorandum of title from Lucas County, Ohio.
Sidebar, you can Google the address on the title and see the power
plant sitting there today, and just imagine this Z/28 sitting in a
barn in that field and all the people who drove by and had no idea
what was hiding inside. The car was removed from the barn on a roll
back and all the parts were collected. Everything was organized and
cataloged, and the restoration began. The process was photo
documented, and the car was taken apart down to the last bolt and
nut and put back together. Numbers were verified to be original and
noted in the 1969 Z/28 fact book by the renowned Jerry MacNeish of
Camaro Hi-Performance, included with this car. The driveline was
gone through, completely rebuilt, and this is matching numbers
engine, transmission, and rear axle. The body did require some rust
repairs in the lower rockers and quarters, but this Z/28 still has
its original floors, trunk floor, rear quarters, front fenders and
hood. This was a four-year process that culminated with what you
see listed here for sale today. This car has been driven
approximately 2,500 miles over a seven-year period since the
restoration was completed. This Z/28 is a treat to drive and pulls
strong through all four gears. The looks and thumbs up you get
driving this are innumerable, and you better be sure you have time
for conversation at every fuel stop. How often do you get the
chance to purchase a two owner 1969 Z/28 with the kind of history
and documentation, with matching numbers and original sheet metal?
