Vehicle Description
Founded in 1954 under the leadership of Jean Daninos, Facel-Vega
sought to revive France's tradition of coachbuilt luxury cars. Over
its brief but illustrious existence, the company produced
approximately 2,900 automobiles, each meticulously crafted to
embody style, luxury, and-particularly in its V8 models-exceptional
performance. Introduced in 1961, the Facel II represented the
pinnacle of the marque's Chrysler V8-powered models and is widely
regarded as one of the most sophisticated and striking Grand
Touring cars of the postwar era. In a 1962 road test, Autocar
magazine described it as "a striking amalgamation of French,
American, and British components," delivering effortless high-speed
performance. As the successor to the celebrated HK500, the Facel II
featured a thoroughly modernized design with sleek, refined styling
and a significant performance boost, thanks to Chrysler's potent
383ci "Wedge" V8 engine. Staying true to its heritage, it retained
hallmark design elements such as the distinctive multi-element
grille and twin-stacked headlamps, now elegantly covered. Updates
like a sleeker roofline, thinner pillars, and a flatter windscreen
improved visibility while enhancing its timeless appeal. Combined
with improved handling and dynamic performance, the Facel II
epitomizes the perfect blend of sophistication, craftsmanship, and
speed. Hand-built to the highest standards, Facel-Vega automobiles
commanded premium prices, with the Facel II competing in the same
price bracket as Rolls-Royce. These exclusive vehicles attracted an
elite clientele, including royalty, diplomats, politicians, and
Hollywood icons like Tony Curtis, Ringo Starr, Ava Gardner, and
Joan Fontaine. Even renowned racing legends such as Sir Stirling
Moss and Maurice Trintignant admired the cars for their elegant
designs and high-performance engineering. Despite its brilliance,
the Facel II was the marque's swan song. Mounting financial
difficulties, largely stemming from an unsuccessful
engine-manufacturing venture, forced Facel-Vega to cease production
in 1964, leaving only 182 examples of the Facel II in existence.
The Facel II presented here, HK2B126, was originally delivered to
the USA in 1962. It left the Paris factory finished in silver-grey
with black leather interior and equipped with standard factory
features, including Chrysler's renowned Torqueflite automatic
transmission. Additional comfort was later provided by a
retrofitted air conditioning system. This exceptional coupe
underwent a comprehensive body-off restoration some years ago,
during which every component was meticulously dismantled and
restored to concours-quality standards. The body was refinished in
an elegant metallic blue, while all chrome, stainless steel, and
wire-spoke wheels were either replaced or polished to their
original brilliance. The chassis was sandblasted and repainted, and
the steering, front and rear axles, and differential were repaired
and refinished to complement the refreshed exterior. Inside, the
cabin received an equally thorough restoration. The seats and
console were reupholstered in beautiful cream leather with blue
piping, while the carpet and paneling were replaced to match. The
wood-grain dash and central panel remains in excellent condition,
with only one very minor chip noted. The engine bay is meticulously
maintained, featuring the original matching-numbers
Chrysler-sourced 383ci "Wedge" V8 engine (TY8712244). Both the
engine and gearbox have undergone comprehensive overhauls, while
the electrical system has been fully rewired, properly routed, and
neatly concealed for a clean presentation. It is among the finest
examples we have encountered in over 35 years of buying and selling
Facel-Vegas-an association that dates back to 1989 when Hyman Ltd.
sold its very first car, a Facel II. The paint and brightwork
remain in excellent condition, with only minor imperfections on the
rear bumper plating and two small rock chips in the rear glass. The
interior presents beautifully, showing only light wear consistent
with careful use. Every other aspect of the car remains
outstanding, from its precise panel fitment to its exceptional
drivability, offering a smooth ride and strong performance. Crisp
and elegant in its presentation, this 1963 Facel-Vega Facel II
represents one of the finest surviving examples of the marque's
ultimate grand tourer. It stands as the culmination of a
half-century of great French automotive craftsmanship, following in
the tradition of Delahaye, Delage, Talbot-Lago, Bugatti, and
Hispano-Suiza. Whether on a concours lawn, at club events, or on a
spirited drive, this Facel II is ready to impress-combining
effortless V8 performance with luxurious four-passenger comfort.
