CMC is proud to present This 1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback, bearing
Shelby No. 00544; an extraordinary example of muscle car history.
As the top-tier variant of the Mustang lineup, the GT500 was
engineered with a mix of incredible performance and refined luxury.
The second-generation Mustang body, redesigned in 1967 to
accommodate Ford's larger FE-Series engine, was the perfect
foundation for the mighty Shelby GT500. However, Shelby stepped it
up by dropping the Police Interceptor's 428 CI V8 engine into the
engine bay, giving birth to a performance icon. While Ford rated
the 428 engine at 360 horsepower, the true output was closer to 400
horsepower and an impressive 420 lb-ft of torque-delivering
incredible power and precision on the road, a hallmark of the
Shelby tradition.
For 1968, Shelby introduced significant updates to the GT500's
appearance, ensuring that it retained a distinct and aggressive
identity. The front-end treatment was overhauled, with a lengthened
hood and front fenders, air scoops, louvered cooling vents, and a
carefully integrated rear spoiler. The headlamps and tail lamps
were updated, with the latter inspired by the 1965 Thunderbird.
Inside, the car featured a covered roll bar and inertia-reel
shoulder belts for added safety, marking a transition to more
modern features. It was also during this year that Shelby offered
convertible variants of both the GT350 and the GT500, further
expanding the model's appeal.
This particular GT500 is the product of a rotisserie restoration,
meticulously rebuilt to factory specifications. It retains all of
its original charm and performance characteristics, powered by the
formidable 428/360 HP Cobra Jet V8 engine, complete with finned
Cobra valve covers and air cleaner. The engine is mated to a
4-speed manual transmission and a 3.50 standard rear axle ratio,
providing a thrilling, responsive driving experience. The
combination of power and refinement makes this Shelby a true muscle
car masterpiece.
The car is well-appointed with numerous premium features, including
the fold-down Sport Deck rear seat, power steering, and power front
disc brakes. It also features a heavy-duty battery, the Visibility
Group (which enhances safety and driver visibility), and the
Interior Decor Group, which includes the comfortable bucket seats,
a tilt-away steering wheel, and a Philco AM radio for an added
touch of luxury. The attention to detail and the high level of
standard features truly set the GT500 apart from its competitors in
1968.
As a rare example, this Shelby GT500 is one of only 1,019 GT500
fastbacks produced in 1968, making it highly sought after by
collectors and enthusiasts. A comprehensive Elite Marti Report
accompanies the car, documenting its factory data, production
statistics, and original features and options, further cementing
its status as a genuine and well-preserved piece of automotive
history. Additional Documentation includes the owners manual and
various Restoration Receipts.
Whether you're a collector, a Shelby enthusiast, or someone who
appreciates the rare combination of luxury and raw power, this 1968
Shelby GT500 Fastback, with its rich heritage and stunning
restoration, is a must-have addition to any collection.
