Vehicle Description
Following the runaway success of the Ford Mustang in 1965, FoMoCo
executives gave the green light to Lincoln-Mercury to develop a new
model, based on the upcoming revised Mustang platform, to slot
between the Mustang and the Thunderbird. The Mercury Cougar, which
debuted alongside the newly refreshed 1967 Mustang, was meant to
combine 'Personal Luxury' attributes of the T-Bird in a more
driver-focused platform. One of the key points of the Mustang's
redesign was to allow for larger engines to stay on par with Mopar
and GM. This also allowed Mercury to give the Cougar some serious
power, resulting in a surprisingly capable GT car aimed at the more
mature muscle car buyer.
