Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS/SS Convertible Tribute
The first generation Chevrolet Camaro is an American pony car
introduced by Chevrolet in the fall of 1966 for the 1967 model
year. It rode on a brand new rear wheel drive GM F-body platform
and was available as a 2 door, 2 plus 2 seat, hardtop, and
convertible. A designation of RS was an appearance package that
included hidden headlights and was available on any model,
including the SS.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible RS/SS tribute
with 16,628 non actual miles shown. This tribute to a unicorn
affords the opportunity to drive a car with combined features that
almost never existed. More rare than Yenko and COPO Camaros, the
'68 droptop SS seems like a worthy recipient of a tribute and an
opportunity to tell the story of Chevy's Holy Grail.
Exterior
One of 19 colors available in 1968, and the only one of yellow
hues, this car wears a coat of Butternut Yellow with better than
new two stage glow. The front end is where all the action is, with
a black nose stripe and covered headlights, both specific to the
RS. Those covers mimic the grate of the grille and while other cars
had covered their headlights, on the Camaro it just seems to make
it look faster somehow. A cowl hood sends its riser over the
louvered cowl just before the polished trim of the windshield
begins and this, as with all of the metalwork of the car, is in
great shape. We've got some action out back with an SS gas cap
between two color taillights and under a rear wing. 14-inch
Chevrolet Rally wheels wear slightly staggered 70 series tires
while up top, the black canvas top presents in excellent condition
including its large plastic window. The only imperfection we find
is a spider crack above the polished rocker panel.
Interior
Standard black door panels greet us as we open the ports with
stitched vinyl over smooth vinyl and silver trim. Over the Fisher
Body emblem on the sill, we go to find bucket seats in the same
color and materials with a mar on the driver's bottom side,
otherwise in very good condition which is echoed by the rear bench.
Patina on the steering wheel is normal, and it fronts a clean dash
with two main dials in front, the tachometer cleverly having a
clock ride piggyback in the center. Woodgrain adorns the center
stack where we find vent control levers and an AM/FM radio just
over an ashtray and above the four gauge package synonymous with
classic performance Camaros. A Hurst shifter is next, also embraced
by woodgrain, and offering a cue ball sized handle to the pilot,
all atop a layer of black carpet and Camaro branded mats. The trunk
is nice, covered in a period plaid mat and holding a full sized
spare tire.
Drivetrain
It may not be a 396, but it sure is clean. We're talking about the
350ci V8 under the hood in glimmering show quality and fueled by a
Holley 4-barrel carburetor. It's not the rock crusher but it's the
next best thing, a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission is on
board, sending power to the 10 bolt rear. Power disc brakes are
found not just in the front but in the rear as well! We like that
the emblems on the fenders and the decal on the air cleaner are
straightforward and all say "350".
Undercarriage
Spotless! Clean! Uniformly black underneath with bright blue
bushing bucking the trend and of course, dual exhaust flowing
through a stock style muffler before the tips end just behind the
rear wheels. Coil spring suspension is found up front and leaf
springs out back. There's some oil on the pan and surface rust is
reserved for a few bolts and that's not too shabby for this
tribute.
Drive-Ability
Top up or top down, this is one clean machine that begs to be
driven. And so we oblige, albeit briefly. Around the test loop we
go where the 350 delivers good power, the car tracks straight, and
handles well. More importantly, shifts are smooth and the clutch is
comfortable easily responding to our upshifts and propelling the
car forward with eagerness. Finally, all functions onboard operate
as they should on this buttoned up Butternut. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
Most people will see this as a convertible SS and not blink an eye.
But those in the know will praise its efforts to honor one of the
rarest American cars ever to be produced. Either way, the new owner
will have a fantastic Camaro, clean and sorted, and a showpiece to
enjoy. Picture yourself on Main Street, Summer 2025, with the top
down and family on board. Get your thumb warmed up because the
natural response to a thumbs up, is a thumbs up!
