The 1987 Acura Legend was a pivotal vehicle that helped launch
Honda's luxury division, Acura, in North America. It broke new
ground by introducing Honda's first-ever production V6 engine and
offered upscale features designed to challenge European luxury
manufacturers.The 1987 model year featured two different engine
displacements depending on whether you chose the 4-door sedan or
the newly introduced 2-door coupe.- Legend Sedan Engine: 2.5-liter,
24-valve SOHC V6 producing 151 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque.-
Legend Coupe Engine: 2.7-liter, 24-valve SOHC V6 producing 161
horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.- Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive
with equal-length half-shafts to eliminate torque steer.-
Transmissions: 5-speed manual or an electronically controlled
4-speed automatic with a selectable "Sport" mode.- Suspension:
Four-wheel independent suspension with front double-wishbones
derived from Formula 1 development.Alongside the smaller Integra,
the Legend successfully established the Acura brand in 1986--1987.
It proved that Japanese manufacturers could build reliable,
high-tech executive cars, forcing German brands to rethink their
entry-level strategies.
