Vehicle Description
1935 Chevrolet Master 2 Door Sedan
In its heyday, Sparrows Point, an unincorporated part of Baltimore,
Maryland, was home to the largest steel mill in the world
stretching for 4 miles and employing 30,000 workers. Steel was
first made there in 1889 and the location was selected for its deep
water port. The complex eventually housed a GM assembly plant and
today its home to an Amazon fulfillment center and the Volkswagen
Group of America, among others.
For consignment, a 1935 Chevrolet Master 2 door sedan showing
14,189 which are not actual miles. This car has a storied past,
according to our consignor, who tells us it was the first car off
the assembly line in Sparrows Point in 1935 and served as a display
vehicle in GM's museum until 1985. In 2000, it entered into a
street rod conversion resulting in the car you see today. The car
was once featured in Street Scene magazine and is an award winner
at Street Rod Nationals in York, PA.
Note: This vehicle is sold with a Pennsylvania reconstructed
branding on the title
Exterior
Slammed on a set of Boyd Coddington wheels, this vintage, steel
bodied sedan wears a coat of Wineberry Pearl paint with wicked
flames that start off as Viper yellow in front and lick back to
shades of orange, red, and purple, some flames jumping to the rear
quarter panel just for good measure. The back end is like a dipped
cone from Dairy Queen, smooth and glossy, while flush mounted tail
lights now adorn the wide fenders and twin exhaust tips push past
the bottom edge. The fenders are connected by a wide running board
and the metalwork of mirrors, door handles, grille, and headlight
buckets all present in great condition and without bumpers, the
resulting front and rear ends are streamlined and clean.
Imperfections include areas of cracking paint, chips, scuffs, and
some scratches.
Interior
Gray tweed door panels are accompanied by wood trim on the door
pull and window cranks, along with a graphic carved into the tweed.
The material makes its way to the front bucket seats which display
"35 Chevy" in teal embroidery on each headrest. A back bench shares
the material and is perched on a covered box that serves as storage
and houses a 6 CD changer. Our glossy wood steering wheel connects
to the hub via three chromed spokes and heads under the dash via a
polished tilt column. Wineberry paint and a Wabbit's wood dash
alternative with a center panel housing a myriad of white faced VDO
vintage design gauges. In the overhead console, an AM/FM/Cassette
radio is mounted along with lights embedded in more shiny wood
panels, compliments of Wabbit's, among a textured tweed headliner.
Low pile gray carpet completes the finished interior.
Drivetrain
Behind the engine covers sits a pretty 350ci V8 with an Edelbrock
4-barrel carburetor, headers, and a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power to the Ford 9" in back. For brakes, the
car is supplied with discs up front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with some surface rust, some oil by the drain
plug, fluid on the transmission pan and brace, and a clean, shiny
flywheel cover. Dual exhaust comes off the headers and wear surface
rust all the way to the Turbo mufflers, then find their way to the
back, exiting via polished tips. Suspension consists of a Heidts
Mustang II style in front and Posies rear leaf springs.
Drive-Ability
Having been a museum piece for 50 years, it's likely this car has a
short list of drivers over its lifetime and we add ourselves to
that list as we take it around the loop. The 350 delivers good
power, the 70 series tires and suspension provide a smooth ride,
and the interior gives the gift of comfort and driving fun. It is a
complete package, and this well sorted rod has all functions
checking the "working" boxes. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Born in 1935 and built in the 2000's, this car also has some
"retro" 90's street rod influence when tweed, wood, and Boyd
Coddington were hot tickets. It's a transformation that has held up
very well and if this car could talk, it would probably thank the
owners for freeing it, dressing it up, and putting in a mighty V8,
now living the life of a winning show car to be enjoyed by the next
owner. Here's a good looking rod with some provenance, so if you're
in the market, come get Sparrows Point's finest!
