Thank you for taking the time to stop in to check out our classic
and special interest car collection. If you haven't already, find
the time to stop in our new showroom at 5077 Transit Road in
Lancaster where dozens of our special interest cars are displayed
in a temperature-controlled environment. The Basil family has been
providing excellence in automotive sales and service to the western
New York area for more than 70 years and now has advanced into the
special interest car market. Here we have a very nicely restored
1958 Ford Skyliner retractable convertible for your review.
Although the French appeared to have been the first to offer a
retractable hardtop convertible car in their Peugeot line during
the 1930s, Ford was the first manufacturer to mass produce a
retractable hardtop convertible. Beginning in 1957 and running for
three model years through 1959, Ford produced 48,394 retractable
hardtop convertibles called Skyliners. In the introductory year of
1957, a total of 20,766 units were sold but reduced in numbers
somewhat in 1958 with the release of only 14,713 Skyliners for
public sale. The final year for Skyliner production, 1959, saw the
fewest of this model produced numbering only 12,925 units sold.
Ford was the only one of the big three automotive companies to
attempt this design which was fairly well received by consumers but
the elimination of adequate storage room in the trunk area did
prove to be somewhat of a setback for the Skyliner and eventually
contributed to its demise. With fewer than several thousand
Skylines thought to exist today, it has become a sought-after
collectable in the automotive enthusiast world. Our 1958 Skylines
is thought to have been purchased locally and owned as a pleasure
vehicle by a farmer in Clarence for some time. It was purchased
from the Clarence owner and restored by Fred La Rock who owned a
restoration shop on River Road in Niagara Falls. From there, it was
purchased by an enthusiast and entered into his car collection
where it remained until making its way to Basil Classics Cars. This
remarkable Skylines was not driven during the time it spent in its
former owner's collection. It is powered by a 352ci V8 engine with
dual exhaust, power steering and a three speed automatic
transmission. The chrome and stainless trim shows very well and the
tan metallic paint is in excellent overall condition. Additional
exterior options include a driver's side spotlight, fender skirts
and the extended rear bumper accommodates a full body colored
continental kit which houses the spare tire. The tricolor interior
seats six passengers comfortably, is equipped with a town and
country radio and all original instrumentation appears as new.
Carpeting and interior panels are in exceptional condition as well.
This unusual and rare classic Skyliner will draw attention at any
car show or cruise night and will provide hours of truly
pleasurable driving. With so few still in existence, this classic
Ford retractable is truly an excellent value. We urge you to stop
in and view this rare convertible, because of its rarity, we
believe it will quickly find a new home. We understand that buying
