This remarkable 1967 Austin Healey "Big Healey" was initially
purchased in late 1966 by Robert J. Shepps of Texas for $3,893.76
(original title and payment receipts included). In October of 1994,
it changed hands to Ohio resident Robert Andrew Smithson, who, in
early 1995, commissioned a comprehensive, nut-and-bolt restoration
from Nationwide Auto Restoration. Full documentation of the
restoration process is available in detailed photo albums,
showcasing the meticulous work done to return the car to its
original splendor. Having been stored in a private collection ever
since, this Austin Healey remains a shining example of British
automotive craftsmanship, now offered for sale by the current
owner.
++Exterior++
The exterior of this Healey is in excellent condition, free from
rust and only showing a few minor blemishes from years of careful
storage. The British Racing Green Glasurit paint still holds a
deep, consistent shine and remains in exceptional condition,
despite being applied in the late 1990s. The bodywork and paint are
impressively smooth, with just a small, dime-sized protrusion on
the hood from an incident with the hood closing. All lights,
chrome, hardware, glass, and trim are in pristine condition. The
soft top and tonneau cover are virtually like new, and the original
boot cover is in excellent shape. The BMC wheels are also in
outstanding condition, though we recommend replacing the tires due
to age. The inner wheel wells are clean and showcase excellent
paintwork. Overall, this Healey presents as a very straight,
accurate example of the marque.
++Interior++
Originally fitted with a black interior, the car was upgraded to a
tan interior during its restoration. The interior is flawless, with
minimal signs of wear. The SMITHS-brand gauges have been fully
restored, and the dash wood and glove box are in excellent
condition. All switches and knobs show in excellent condition and
function as they should, and the carpet and floor mats are in
excellent condition, showing no signs of wear. It's evident that
this car has been driven sparingly since its restoration,
preserving its pristine interior.
+Under the Hood/Mechanical+
Under the hood, the original 3000 Series 2,912cc 6-cylinder engine
pairs with the original overdrive transmission. All mechanical
components were fully rebuilt during the restoration, utilizing a
new wiring harness, though most original parts were retained. The
engine bay is a testament to the low mileage and careful upkeep of
this car post-restoration. As with any vehicle of its age, a few
components may require attention. The original Girling brake
calipers were sticky when we got the car to our shop so we cleaned
and re-bled, ensuring proper functionality. The car starts strong
and runs well, though we noticed a drip from the front carburetor,
likely caused by a dry or cracked gasket. Like any seldom-driven
classic, it would benefit from a thorough mechanical inspection and
tune-up. That said, the car runs beautifully and drives as it
should.
The underbody reflects the full extent of the restoration and
remains exceptionally clean and well-maintained, with updated
suspension bushings in great condition. There are no major leaks or
signs of damage, and the underside looks as pristine as the rest of
the vehicle.
++Conclusion++
This extremely well documented 1967 Austin Healey BJ8, with its
comprehensive restoration, presents an excellent opportunity for
any classic car enthusiast or collector. The car has been cared for
and preserved over the years, and it is now ready for its next
chapter. This vehicle is being offered for sale as part of a
consignment sale, and we are pleased to represent the current owner
in this process. For more details or to arrange a viewing, please
