For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle in Charlotte, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

To many, the mighty Chevelle is the quintessential American muscle car. It didn't start the movement, but, in 1970, it certainly perfected it. Everything, from the car's handsome looks and feared reputation to its myriad body styles and array of sizzling big blocks, eventually became the stuff of legend. So, how do you make a sinister, big block Chevelle better than great? You build a professional rotisserie restoration around 502 cubic inches of Chevrolet power!

For most enthusiasts, the best muscle cars are the cars that stay muscle cars. As nice as extreme pro-touring builds are, sometimes they just go too far in forcing classic metal into a super car mold. We've all seen it - a barely recognizable classic with no vintage feel and generally compromised usability. That's the truly brilliant thing about this Chevelle. It takes an honest, beloved muscle car and emboldens everything about it.

THE BIGGEST BIG BLOCK

Open this Chevy's functional Cowl Induction Hood and you'll find 502 cubic inches of GM Performance Parts V8 that was ordered specifically for this installation. Straight from GM, that engine combines a forged crank, forged rods and forged aluminum pistons with a hydraulic roller cam, an aluminum intake and aluminum, oval-port heads to twist 9.6 to 1 compression into 502 horsepower. And to top it all off, that power is readily available thanks to HEI ignition, ceramic-coated Flowtech headers and a modern Holley carburetor. Just as cool as the car's effortless oomph is how well the engine bay has been dressed to look like it's fresh off a GM assembly line. A polished air cleaner, finished with a retro 502 decal, looks right at home between a Chevy Orange block, factory-style valve covers and a factory-style AC compressor. And items like muted Taylor plug wires, an Optima gel cell battery and a polished aluminum radiator, complete with electric puller fans, have been cleanly integrated.

A SOLID FOUNDATION

This Chevy's detailed, ground-up restoration was completed by Tony's Muscle Cars of Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania. As documented in the photos included with our sale, the car's body was mounted to a rotisserie and stripped all the way to bare metal. That metal was layered in deep Tuxedo Black 2-stage, detailed with classy Super Sport stripes and spiked with fresh trim that includes discreet "SS502" emblems. That monochromatic theme spills through the power-operated windows as well, where taut black vinyl hides a full wrap of Hushmat insulation. Low-riding buckets prop factory headrests behind a straight dash, which plants Deluxe Telemetry between cool air conditioning and a tilt steering wheel. At the floor, the driver rows a traditional Hurst shifter around a factory console that's shaded by Auto Meter accessory gauges. And a direct-fit radio pushes amps through modern kick speakers and factory deck speakers.

IMPROVING A LEGEND

The bottom of this Chevelle is much like its top, in that all the car's best attributes have been emphasized through quality restoration. Behind the 502, a tough Muncie 4-speed has been armored with an Auto Gear SuperCase. That transmission spins power to a 12-bolt Eaton posi that's finished with 3.42 gears. Those gears push a requisite F41 Sport Suspension that's been slightly lowered. Turns are provided by a power-assisted Saginaw steering gear. Stops come courtesy of power-assisted Wilwood calipers, which clench a quartet of drilled and slotted rotors. Stainless exhaust pipes spent gases through an x-shaped crossover and strident Pypes mufflers. And everything rolls on staggered Ridler wheels and fresh General tires.

Want a one-shot muscle car that's fun to drive and fun to look at? This Chevelle is a well-tailored classic that hasn't forgotten where it came from. Taking the virtues of timeless Chevrolet metal and dialing them up to 11, it represents everything great about the classic car hobby. Call to schedule your test drive today!
