Vehicle Description
1956 Chevrolet 210 2-Door Sedan
"Are you feeling slightly day dreamy these days? Find yourself
thinking of far away places where tall trees hem in the highway and
sunlight skips merrily along a chuckling mountain stream? That's
spring fever, friend. It's curable though, and we don't mean with
sulphur and molasses. You just pick yourself up a frisky new
Chevrolet and go find a mountain stream. Sunday sightseeing around
town and afternoon jaunts in the countryside are shiny new
adventures when you're driving one of these fun loving new Chevys."
From one of many 1956 print ads for Chevrolet. Thanks to the
interwebs, we learn that sulphur and molasses were used in a wives'
tale to thicken blood that had been thinned by winter.
For consignment, a 1956 Chevrolet 210 2 door sedan with a title
verified 105,113 actual miles. The car is a culmination of 40 years
of ownership, including some early periods of the car sat patiently
in a garage as our consignor gathered parts. Painted and put back
together in 1995, the car has many rebuilt components and a well
documented history of repaired or replaced parts.
Exterior
All of Chevy's 19 models in 1956 were promoted and available as two
tone vehicles, so it's nice when one bucks the system and shows up
in one color, in this case, Garnet Red. And while the polished trim
on the side delineated the two tone, here it just accents the
maroon paint and as a result, stands out ever more boldly and
includes the "hockey stick" and the sweeping, descending blade that
travels down to the rear bumper wrap-around. The trim also picks up
on the 15-inch American Racing wheels which cast a shine of their
own and are wrapped in staggered size tires. Narrow pillars and
large windows create a vast greenhouse and what's better than the
curved windshield? Dressy tail light nacelles are a design
highlight and the large decklid rivals the hood in sheer girth. The
metalwork is decent and so is the paint, although there are
numerous touched up scratches, chips, outright scratches, uneven
filler, bubbling, cracks, rust repairs, surface rust, and paint
runs.
Interior
Gray vinyl over tweed panels make up the inner doors in a handsome
presentation that likely veers from original but are tidy and clean
and look period correct. And so does the split bench seat with
tweed upper and vinyl sides in a black shell and other than some
waviness to the piping, are in very good shape along with the rear
bench. A Grant steering wheel greets the driver and allows a sight
line to the wedge shaped speedometer which interrupts a grille-like
mid panel that spans the dashboard, only to be met by another wedge
on the right side and an AM radio smack dab in the middle. Above
and below that grille is the body colored dash, a hard, smooth
surface that was the norm for decades. This is a column shift car,
so the floor is open and wide and everything including the
transmission hump is covered in low pile gray carpet in great
condition. Above our noggins, the tweed headliner presents as
coordinated and handsome alternative to other materials that may
have been used while the trunk has a fitted rubber liner to protect
its enormous cargo area.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a multi colored and rebuilt 350ci V8 with an
Edelbrock 650cfm 4-barrel carburetor, backed by a rebuilt TH350
3-speed automatic transmission that meets 3.36 gears in the rebuilt
rear end. Power brakes are present and accounted for, evidenced by
the gold booster that along with crimson parts and an orange block,
make for a multi hued engine bay that's ready for show! Those
brakes are configured as front discs and rear drums.
Undercarriage
The clean underside has its share of surface rust and a drop or two
of oil on the pan, but nothing is overly concerning as the rebuilt
front suspension is obvious and a welcome sign and includes coil
springs. Leaf springs are out back, and the dual exhaust comes from
headers and passes an H-pipe on their way to FlowMaster mufflers
and polished tips. There's some flaking on the frame beams but it
does not appear structural and we notice an area of rust on an
inner panel near the rear quarter, also not structural.
Drive-Ability
With 1,000 cars in inventory and more coming every day, our test
drives tend to be just long enough to test functions in the car
without enjoying ourselves "too much". That's the case here as the
Edelbrock sucks in some fuel and brings the 350 to life with some
nice exhaust tones out back. 70 series tires handle road
imperfections along with the suspension and we experience decent
power from the V8. We back the car up to our reflective glass doors
and note the brake lights are not working. But that's about the
only thing that's not! All other lights, gauges, and systems work
as they should and it's back to the mall in this gem colored
beauty. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
You don't need a mountain stream to enjoy this car. Heck, a quick
ride to Wawa, (or Sheetz for you PA residents further west), is
enough to cure the blues in this well sorted car. It's not only a
solid driver, but a solid colored driver, one that will get noticed
and with all of the interior space, plenty of room for you, your
family, and some of their belongings. To see one of these on the
street is an event in 2025 and if you don't like attention and
frequent thumbs ups, you probably stopped reading long ago! Is 210
your new area code? It can be with a simple call to Classic Auto
Mall!
