Vehicle Description
The Basil family is very pleased to present for sale this iconic
1970 Plymouth Superbird for your consideration.
Basilclassiccars.com is the latest extension of the Basil
automotive family, bringing you excellence in the automotive
industry for more than 70 years. The Plymouth Superbird and Dodge
Daytona were produced in 1970 for that year alone. Chrysler
corporation saw the need for these cars to achieve greater
competitiveness in the NASCAR racing circuit. Fords Gran Torino was
dominating the NASCAR circuit in the late 1960s and as a result,
Plymouth lost Richard Petty, their most competitive driver, to
Ford, a huge blow to their team. The Superbird and Daytona
modifications to the Roadrunner and Charger were shrouded in
secrecy and kept from the public. Once released, they were only
allowed to compete on the NASCAR circuit if the modified Charger
and Roadrunner platform was also made available on the retail
market. Subsequently, about 1935 Superbirds and 503 Dodge Daytonas
were sent to showrooms across the country, and an uncertain number
were sent to NASCAR and the racing circuit. The radical
modifications were so successful that Richard Petty, who returned
to Plymouth, won 8 races in the new hemi powered Superbird and
Buddy Baker crossed the 200mph barrier operating a 1970 Dodge
Daytona. These supercars were so successful they dominated 33 out
of 48 races they competed in. Due to concerns regarding brakes and
tires not being designed to handle speeds exceeding 200mph, NASCAR
limited engine cubic inch displacements to 350, which delt a death
blow to the Daytona and Superbird models. This beautiful 1970
Superbird was professionally restored in Nebraska during 2006 thru
2007. Painstaking effort was dedicated to return this Superbird to
its exact original condition when it rolled off the assembly line
in November of 1969. All body panels, the nose cone and rear wing
were properly refinished and repainted in their original Alpine
white body color. Correct Plymouth and Superbird decals along with
satin black nose color have been properly applied and factory
duplicate vinyl roof material has also been installed. The
perfectly chromed rear bumper and Plymouth rally wheels wrapped
with Indy 500 Fire Hawk white letter tires complete the stunning
outward appearance of this exciting classic. A period and
production correct 440 cu in engine was rebuilt and installed and
is backed by a 727 torque flight transmission sending power to the
rear wheels thru a 3:55 to 1 rear axle. The rear end and
transmission have original matching numbers, but the 440 engine is
from 1969 and is not original to the car. The base black bench
seat, column shift interior contrasting with, rather than
distracting from, the overall beauty of this vehicle has been
perfectly and properly restored. 74K miles are shown on the 150mph
speedometer and to its left is a factory combination tachometer,
clock. Additional factory gauges to the right and an AM radio is
centered in the handsome black padded dash. This stunning Superbird
is among the finest we have seen and is in perfect show condition.
A complete binder depicting the history of this car as well as its
