Vehicle Description
1969 Plymouth GTX Hardtop
"The GTX remained basically the same in 1969 and 1970. There was
little need to change the car from a performance perspective. It
was the car to beat. Changes were relegated to grill and rear end
updates. In 1970 Plymouth added a third engine option to the list.
It was the famous 440 Six Barrel. The Six Barrel was actually a
trio of two barrel carburetors mounted on top of the engine. Not
only was it cool to look at but it added about 35 horsepower to the
car." Thxautoappraisalnetwork.com
For consignment, a 1969 Plymouth GTX hardtop showing 20,907 miles
on the odometer, but the true miles are unknown. It will come to
you with a numbers matching engine and in very original condition.
With a legend such as this, that's probably enough information to
seal the deal, but let's head to the deep end of the Mopar
pool.
Exterior
Code Y2 Yellow adorns this GTX and is accented by broad flat black
stripes that cover most of the hood, crossing over the gap and
including the power bulges which are vented in red and branded with
440 emblems. There are few cars with a meaner face, the dual
headlights wide and glaring on either side of the red lined grille
over a straight chrome bumper. Red and black will reappear on the
rocker panels and the rear quarters wear the badge that boldly
proclaims this car's identity, large enough to see as the car
speeds past you. Then of course, you get to see the tail, a pair of
simple tail lights outside of a wide deck lid and square rear
fascia and in profile, this car takes aerodynamics and spits in its
face. The wind stands no chance against the GTX, even the
windshield is barely raked, and if Chuck Norris was a muscle car,
he'd be a GTX. 14-inch Mopar Road wheels are just right and blend
in with that lower black panel. The black vinyl top, the metalwork,
paint, and glass are all excellent and we could not find any
glaring exterior flaws.
Interior
Attractive black inner doors include a faux woodgrain panel with
matching black grains and a black vinyl door pull with silver
hardware and they're just about picture perfect. Tall back black
vinyl bucket seats reside in the front with a horizontal stitched
pattern and other than a scuff on the driver's lower, they're in
great shape and the textured vinyl continues to the back bench
where we note a pair of speakers mounted to the package shelf. Back
in front, your standard 3 spoke steering wheel with horn ring caps
the column that leads to a gauge cluster, an array rectangular
gauges on a straight plain with a tachometer and a speedometer that
saves space and weight by not including zeros, so that 15 at the
end translates to 150 mph. An AM radio lives in a woodgrain panel
in the center, GTX is expressed over the glove box, and the wood
and black coordination continues throughout the dash and onto the
center console where the shifter awaits. Black loop carpet below,
black headliner and shoulder belts above, all in great shape. A
spotless trunk includes a vinyl plaid mat and spare tire.
Drivetrain
And there she is! The numbers matching 440ci V8 in all its clean
orange glory, pumping out 375 horsepower and fueled by a single
4-barrel carburetor. A non original A727 Torqueflite 3-speed
automatic transmission is behind it, sending power to the 8 inch
rear with 3.23 gears. To slow the ponies, drum brakes are supplied
on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with some surface rust, general use
patina, and some residual oil on the pan, flywheel cover, and
transmission. Beyond that, a clean underside reveals dual exhaust
that breathes through Dynomax mufflers before heading out back via
oval chrome tips. Torsion bar suspension is found up front with
leaf springs out back.
Drive-Ability
Sound the trumpets, we're about to start the GTX! Another Mopar
legend takes a trip around our test loop to test functionality and
while we're here, we press the long pedal and experience fantastic,
raw power from the 440. 225/70R14's are just right for straight
aways and the standard suspension is fine for softening road
imperfections, but head into turns and you'll get some typical
B-body lean. No complaints, however, as this thing has all the
presence you'll ever need. All functions available on the car work
as they should and we bring it back to the mall. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
While not super rare when produced with more than 14,000 GTX
hardtops leaving the factory, surviving cars today, especially with
their original engine, are more uncommon. This is an iconic Mopar
muscle car that is in great condition both inside and out and will
likely find a new home in short order. They always do. So be sure
to jump in with both feet, the water's great in Lake GTX!
