Vehicle Description
Cruisin Classics is pleased to present to you today this 1988
Pontiac Fiero with only 18,456 actual miles! The Pontiac Fiero,
produced from 1984-1988 was the first rear mid-engine mass-produced
car made by an American manufacturer and it was also the 2nd safest
vehicle sold in America from 84-88 (second only to the Volvo 740DL
station wagon). The Fiero was also revolutionary in that it had a
unique plastic body-on-spaceframe design in which purely cosmetic
body panels that carry no structural load are mounted on a 600lb
steel spaceframe - in fact, a Fiero can be safely driven without
its outer skin! In 1988, the final year of production, Pontiac
completely redesigned the suspension and parts of the spaceframe
resulting in the best handling Fiero's of the 5-year run. Brakes
were also upgraded in '88 with 2-piece calipers and vented rotors
that greatly improved stopping ability. These changes resulted in
the '88 Fiero becoming the most sought-after year amongst
collectors and enthusiasts. The car we are offering today is the
base model notch-back version that accounted for half of the sales
that year.
This Fiero comes to us today dressed in its original factory coat
of bright red paint that beautifully complements the sporty wedge
shape of the car. The paint is in good driver quality with minor
imperfections from light use. The low-slung aerodynamic front end
features hidden flip-up headlights at the forward edge of the hood
that work as they should. Centered between the headlights on the
front clip is a black Pegasus crest (the Fiero "symbol") in good
condition. A black body molding strip runs across the bumper
portion and makes a full loop around the car. Beneath the angular
nose are air intakes for the radiator and a black chin spoiler.
Looking down the sides of the car you'll find dual black sport
mirrors, black sail panels, factory-tinted windows with black trim,
a black air intake vent behind the door on the driver's side, and
the aforementioned body molding strip in which the door handles and
side marker lights are integrated. The only badging on the side of
the car is a small red Pontiac "dart" on the sail panel pillar. As
your gaze flows to the rear of the car you can't help but notice
the large rear spoiler wing on the decklid that really adds to the
sporty look. Around the back, you'll find a vertical rear window,
black vent covers flanking the decklid next to the cabin, crystal
clear grid-pattern taillight covers, and twin fluted chrome exhaust
tips (but single exhaust) on the driver's side. Completing the
exterior look is a set of factory aluminum wheels wrapped in a
brand-new set of white-letter BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires.
Under the Fieros forward lifting hood you'll find no engine at all.
The front space is occupied by the headlights, radiator, brake
booster, reservoir, clutch master cylinder, mini spare tire, and a
factory jack. There is enough room to perhaps sit a duffel bag on
the spare tire, but it is definitely not a trunk. Step around back
and lift the decklid to reveal both the trunk and the engine
compartment. The trunk is dressed with grey carpet and it is
surprisingly deep and spacious for such a small car. Between the
trunk and the cabin is the engine compartment and both black vent
covers are easily removed to provide greater access to the engine.
Powering this Fiero is a fuel-injected 2.5 liter 151ci 4-cylinder
GM "Iron Duke" engine that looks bone-stock. It may not be the
quickest engine out there, but when paired with a stock Isuzu
5-speed manual transmission like this one is, it's enough to make
this little rear-wheel drive 2-seater a really fun car to zip
around in.
Open the driver's door to discover a very well-preserved and
completely stock grey interior. The door panels are a mix of grey
carpet and grey vinyl with armrests, window cranks, and a driver's
mirror toggle. Slide inside and take a seat in one of the sporty
grey cloth-bolstered bucket seats. It may take a minute to adjust
to the low seating position with outstretched legs, but you'll
quickly appreciate the sports car feel that this layout provides.
Between the seats is a wide center console that includes a
flip-down storage box, an armrest, a shifter for the 5-speed with a
black knob boot, and dual ashtrays. The crack-free linear dash
combines the gauges and accessories into two separate rectangular
pods. At the center, just above the console is a pod that contains
the HVAC controls and the stereo. The A/C blows nice and cold, the
heat is hot, and the fan blows strong. The stereo is a factory
Delco AM/FM/Cassette unit that plays through two speakers in the
dash. There are an additional 2 stock speakers on the B-pillars but
they are inoperative. Ahead of the driver is a larger pod that
contains all of the gauges - speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temp,
and oil as well as a grouping of warning lights. The odometer reads
only 18,456 actual miles! The light switch for those cool flip-up
headlights is on the left side of this pod. The driver is treated
to a 4-spoke dark grey steering wheel with working horn buttons on
a tilt column. The turn signal indicator stalk is also home to
controls for the intermittent wipers. Directly ahead of the
passenger is a storage "slot/caddy" on the dash which contains the
original owner's manual, warranty booklet, and maintenance
schedule. Overhead you'll find a tight felt headliner and underfoot
is nice factory grey carpeting. An emergency brake handle can be
found on the floor to the driver's left.
If you're a collector, an enthusiast, or just someone looking for a
sporty mileage 2-seater, you're going to want to take a serious
look at this 1988 Pontiac Fiero! With a 5-speed, fuel-injection,
cold A/C, power disc brakes, and amazing handling - this Fiero sure
does check a lot of boxes! Give us a call today and be the lucky
driver who gets to cruise everywhere in one of the coolest cars
that came out of the 80's!
