Vehicle Description
1980 International Scout Traveller
The 1980 International Scout Traveler was an extended version of
the Scout II, a popular SUV in the 1960s and 1970s. The Traveler
had a 118 inch wheelbase, which was longer than the Scout II's 100
inch wheelbase, and a distinctive fiberglass rear roof. It was
designed to be family friendly, with options for rear bench seating
and an emphasis on interior comfort.
For consignment and your off road enjoyment, a 1980 International
Scout Traveller. This one has been garage kept, bathed in satin
black, has a custom audio system, roll cage, recovered seats, a
sunshade, and best of all an engine rebuild with some spice added
while doing so. Off roading at its best in this 83,258 non
verifiable mile version, Scouts honor!
Exterior
A custom black bumper and grille guard along with some extra
lighting lead the way and sit right in front of the black square
and rectangle grille. Satin wrapped steel panels are on all the
lowers of this truck and I do note some rust bubbling and pitting
particularly open the rocker areas, along with a few scratches,
dents and dings. On either side are custom fabricated running
boards which are square steel stock, and make your climb inside
easier. A white top which is removable is noted with the front cab
covering sporting dual sunroofs. This roof is being held on by a
strap which is attached to the running board due to interference
between the roof and roll bar. Save for the rust, panels are
straight and gaps are well minded. This long body rides on 15-inch
wheels wrapped in 31x11.50R15 mudders on all 4 corners.
Interior
A swing of the door and we see recovered like new vinyl buckets
separated by a large stowage box in the center. Cup holders and the
shifters are just in front of the stowage box and the floors are
covered with black carpeting with rubber mats in for extra
protection. The dash is standard IH setup with an extra panel
hanging from the drivers left, housing a voltmeter and a kill
switch. The back of the truck is basically a pickup bed but does
not have any extra seating which was available at the time.
Currently some spare parts are residing in here. The headliner to
the cap is a snappy plaid with a tweed twist, showing fun white,
grey and black, and a blue quilted center panel running the length
of the top. Door panels are newer and have vertical sections in
black vinyl and black steel uppers and carpeted lowers. As noted
above, it has an Alpine aftermarket AM/FM/CD/Bluetooth radio
installed, and we can also note a full roll cage under the cap.
This vehicle is also equipped with cruise control but it is
currently not hooked up, but indeed installed.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a red painted International badged on the valve
coverings, original 345ci V8. This unit was completely torn down,
and inspected, and while apart, bored .030 over, crank spun
balanced after turning .010. The rods were resized, and arp bolts
installed. Flat top pistons with IH 304-345 master kit are in with
a Comp Cams #83-200-4 putting it just a notch above stock but
better performance. The engine was blueprinted, heads overhauled,
and now an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb feeds this beast. In back is an
A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic pushing power to a rear 2.72
gear pumpkin, and in front also a 2.72 differential. A dual
Flowmaster takes the spent fossils to the back of the truck.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust is noted on the usual suspects, and plenty
of undercoating covers the flat surfaces underneath. Structurally
sound framing supports the all corner leaf suspension, and power
front disc brakes with power drums in back. Consigner notes all
fluids were flushed and replaced including coolant.
Drive-Ability
So out on the test track and we have plenty of power at my right
foot, easy power steering, and braking is solid and bias free.
Instruments are working and the cruise control as noted is
disconnected. All in all a good solid driver with plenty of room on
this Traveller. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Some definite rebuilds and upgrades particularly in the power plant
and drivetrain. We have a solid truck with few spots of minor
underlying rust, a nifty satin finish and the versatile top you can
experiment in different configs if you want. The rebuilt engine has
approx. 10K miles on her. I give this truck a Traveller badge!
