Vehicle Description
The Volkswagen Type 2 Bus transformed from a humble factory utility
sketch into one of the most cherished and iconic vehicles in
automotive history. Known by a variety of names-Bus, Kombi,
Microbus, and Transporter-this versatile van became the ideal
companion to Volkswagen's Beetle, sharing its robust air-cooled
flat-four engine and innovative chassis design. The Type 2 captured
hearts worldwide with its unique blend of practicality, charm, and
adaptability, becoming indispensable for work, travel, and leisure.
From panel vans to multi-passenger wagons and campers, the
ingenious design of the Type 2 made it an integral part of
mid-century life. With over one million split-screen buses
produced, each one contributed to a legacy that continues to
inspire nostalgia and admiration.Offered here is an exceptional
1961 Volkswagen Type 2 "Four-Door Station Wagon," a vehicle with a
remarkable story that began as one of the finest unrestored
examples of its kind. With just 29,653 original miles at the time
of writing, this extraordinary Bus was built on November 16, 1960,
and delivered through Miller Motors in Steubenville, Ohio. It
served its original owner dutifully until sidelined in 1968 by a
transmission failure, remaining remarkably preserved for
decades.Rediscovered in 1994 by a dedicated Volkswagen enthusiast
seeking a split-window Beetle, this Bus was lovingly revived and
carefully driven for a year before undergoing a sympathetic
reconditioning process. This reconditioning was approached with an
unwavering commitment to preserving the vehicle's originality and
honoring its storied past. The result is simply one of the best VW
Buses extant. The reconditioning process was meticulous, emphasizing
authenticity and period correctness. The exterior was repainted in
its factory two-tone colors of Mango Green (L346) and Seagull Grey
(L347), painstakingly matched to its original finish, including
period-accurate orange peel and visible weld textures. Inside, the
interior remains largely untouched, with the dash and floors
retaining their original paint and the factory-original seat
covers, rubber mats, Sekurit glass, and fittings still intact. Only
the headliner was replaced, reflecting the level of care and
respect for the Bus's originality. Components were cleaned,
repaired, and reused wherever possible, ensuring the character and
patina of this cherished vehicle were preserved.Mechanically, the
numbers-matching 1200cc engine (engine no. "302 261") remains a
testament to Volkswagen's legendary engineering. With the top end
resealed and the case untouched since it left the factory, the
engine delivers reliable performance true to its original
specifications. Although the original transmission was irreparable,
a period-correct replacement was sourced and installed with the
same dedication to accuracy. The Bus's exceptional preservation and
authenticity have earned it numerous accolades, including the AACA
SF Edge Trophy in 2003, awarded for the best restoration of a
foreign car, and a Senior Grand National Award in 2006.Accompanying
this remarkable Type 2 is an extensive historical file that
enriches its already compelling story. Included are the Volkswagen
Zertifikat, periodicals featuring the Bus, original sales
literature, purchase documents from Miller Motors, judging sheets,
awards, and memorabilia. This is supplemented by the original tool
roll, jack, owner's manual, and second set of keys that are
included as well. This wealth of documentation and original
componentry underscores the loving care and thoughtful stewardship
that this Bus has received throughout its life.Unquestionably one
of the finest Type 2's in existence, this 1961 Volkswagen Bus
offers an unparalleled opportunity to own a celebrated automotive
icon. Whether destined for concours events, nostalgic road trips,
or as a beloved cultural icon, this Type 2 embodies the timeless
spirit and versatility that make Volkswagen's air-cooled vehicles
so treasured. Offers welcome and trades considered. For additional
