Vehicle Description
This 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible is a PHS documented, real deal
GTO Convertible that is ready for some serious summer cruising!
When Pontiac introduced the GTO back in 1964, it was just an option
package that offered improved performance to Pontiac's mid-size
lineup. The GTO package consisted of one of the biggest engines
that Pontiac had to offer and then placed it into one of the
smallest, and least expensive, Pontiac bodies. The result was
performance-oriented vehicle that wasn't terribly expensive. Few
could have predicted the GTO's success and its immense influence
across the entire automotive industry by launching America into the
muscle car era! After the first couple years as an option package,
Pontiac spun off the GTO into its own distinct model line in 1966.
The new '66 GTO models were built on General Motors newly
redesigned A-Body platform. While Pontiac kept the dual stacked
headlights at the nose end on the 1966 GTO, PMD introduced a new
wire mesh grille design with integrated rectangular parking lights
that gave the 1966 GTO an updated look up front. The 1966 Pontiac
GTO also featured new "Coke Bottle" body lines that gave the new
Pontiac model a brand new silhouette. At the tail end, Pontiac
updated the taillights with a new-look triple stacked louvered
design that was used in 1966 only and is considered by many one of
the most beautiful taillights to ever grace a GTO or any Pontiac
for that matter. From nearly every angle, there was no mistaking a
GTO with the special nameplate being found inside the grille, on
the fenders and the rear deck lid. In total, Pontiac produced only
12,798 GTO Convertibles in 1966 which makes this particular example
a pretty rare piece of muscle car history. Powering this '66 GTO
Convertible is an upgraded 400 Cubic Inch V8 fed by a Tri-Power
carburetor setup consisting of a trifecta of dual barrel
carburetors. The 400 V8 is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission
that makes this classic muscle car an absolute blast to take on a
Sunday cruise. Exhaust exits the upgraded power plant via a dual
exhaust setup that generates a wonderfully throaty sound out of the
rear tailpipes. Power is sent to rear wheels via a Safe-T-Track
limited slip differential that helps ensure that you'll be able to
keep the rubber to pavement while driving this Pontiac muscle car.
This classic GTO is riding on a set of redline radial tires mounted
on Rally II wheels that give this Pontiac GTO a gorgeous look and
even better ride. The black vinyl power convertible top is in
wonderful shape and it goes up and down with the simple flick of a
switch. The body on this '66 Pontiac GTO has been correctly
refinished in Burgundy paint that gives this gentleman's muscle car
a wonderfully refined look. The interior of this 1966 Pontiac GTO
Convertible is absolutely gorgeous! The front bucket seats and rear
bench seat have been correctly reupholstered in black vinyl, just
how this classic GTO came back in 1966. The matching door panels,
padded dash, black carpeting, and woodgrain trimmed instrument
cluster are all in wonderful condition, retaining a nice stock
appearance. The instrument cluster is equipped with a 120 MPH
speedometer, 8,000 RPM tachometer, temperature gauge, oil pressure
gauge, and fuel gauge. A pair of Stewart Warner gauges are also
mounted neatly under the dash as well for oil pressure and water
temperature. The dash is finished off with climate controls, an
AM/FM/8-Track entertainment system, and a locking glovebox. Whether
you're buying your very first classic muscle car or you're adding
to an existing collection of classic cars, this 1966 Pontiac GTO
Convertible would make an excellent choice. Give Ellingson's a call
