This timeless styled, custom 1962 Ford F100 Pickup is even more
unique as it wears the innovative, limited-production "Unibody" (or
Unicab) bodystyle. As pickups evolved through the late 1950s, it
was clear that more and more were becoming personal transport
instead of simply workhorses as demand for style, versatility and
creature comforts increased. Ford wanted to one-up GM with its new
for 1961 F100 by offering its own smoothsided pickup that blended
the bed's bodywork in with the cab, doing away with the seam
between the two.
The new Unicab was offered in long- and short-bed body styles. Even
though the new designs were handsome and still functional for
light- to medium-duty loads, by 1962 there was again demand for a
conventionally separated body and cab configuration. The separate
cab and bed allowed for stake beds and chassis-mount campers, which
the Unicab did not. The innovative Unicab F100 was only produced
through 1963 before it was discontinued, yet it's great looks and
limited production have since made the Unibody variants among the
most sought after and collectible F100 models.
The goal of this custom build was to retain the unique unibody
styling while modernizing the performance with vast chassis and
drivetrain upgrades. Starting with a dry Arizona truck wearing its
original sheet metal, evident behind the original paint found on
the undercarriage of the truck.
The basis is an updated chassis equipped with independent front
suspension, power rack and pinion steering, and front disc brakes
delivering superior handling and control on the road. The
powertrain is massively improved thanks to a smooth and reliable
5.0L Coyote V8 and Tremec T56 6 speed expertly installed into a
beautifully designed engine compartment. The exhaust is custom from
stem to stern, including long tube headers, black coated pipes, and
performance mufflers. The front suspension is Mustang II-style
hardware with tubular control arms, and a Ford 9-inch rear end
rides ahead of a relocated fuel tank. Hydro boosted front disc
brakes are hidden behind smooth 16" wheels wrapped in smoothed
Cooper radials.
The cabin is a perfect blend of originality with modern upholstered
touches. Custom seat upholstery, door panels, and headliner are
complimented by taught square weave carpet and a sleek tilting
column.
