Bentley Motor Cars delivered this chassis to Park Ward & Company on
November 11, 1937 with completion on February 1, 1938, as confirmed
by Rolls-Royce documentation. First registration was February 18,
1938.
The 1st owner was Cecil Thomas Lyles, a scion of the Lyles Yarn &
Mill. Then chassis cards show that in 1939 the car is registered to
John Raymond Sutcliffe of Pyenot House in Lightcliffe who was also
a 3rd generation woolen manufacturer (perhaps the families knew
each other?). The Bentley remained in North England until 1967 when
it founds its way to a dealer in Sevenoaks and soon after was
acquired by Yvette & Jacques Kupelian, authors & publishers of
automobile and motorcycle brands such as Audi-Auto-Union,
Mercedes-Benz, Minerva and the Belgium motorcycle industry.
Jacques and Yvette Kupelian purchased this Bentley in England in
May 1969 from a gentleman by the name of Peter Blair Richley in
Ashford (Kent). Mr. Richley took out a provisional insurance policy
"Benelux" valid for 10 days and delivered the car to on May 25,
1969.
According to the "Registration Book" which still accompanies the
vehicle, he is the fourth owner. Once the customs clearance
procedures were completed, the Bentley received a Belgian
registration in the name of Jacques Kupelian. The Belgian
registration-number plate CAK 820 which it would wear for the next
52 years. Used regularly by The Kupelians, it was purchased by its
most recent collector owner in 2023 and imported to the United
States. Just recently, this Bentley was traded to Autosport
Designs, Inc. in a multi-car transaction towards a vintage Aston
Martin from our inventory.
Having had a recent fresh servicing, this Bentley presents in an
appealingly correct condition, sound and well cared for with
confident road manners as one would expect from a proper 1938
Bentley such as this. It is properly equipped with Lucas R100
headlights, appropriate center lamp and Alto horns. Comes complete
with large history file, copies of original build sheets, UK
Logbook, spare parts, extra set of tires, Jack, Spare wheel and
