Vehicle Description
1957 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
"Look here if you're looking for a good way to relax between
plants, patients, or pressing problems. Look at the new Corvette,
with its new V8 engine, new roll up windows, new Synchro-Mesh or
PowerGlide transmission, competition racing steering wheel, a
choice of removable hardtop, manual or power operated fabric top.
And keep this in mind while you're looking: There's a big
difference between Chevrolet Corvette and cut down convertibles,
whether you measure them for personal use or sports car prowess."
From a 1957 Corvette ad
For consignment, a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing 295
miles which are not actual. This car received a six figure frame
off restoration that was completed in 2020 and is the recipient of
an AACA first place Senior award. When this car first roamed the
street, Elvis had four songs in the top 20 while Sam Cooke, Pat
Boone, Paul Anka and Perry Como also made the charts! But its age
does not show as we'll find out.
Exterior
A car that is instantly iconic enters the realm of perpetual
collectability in a coat of Venetian Red, this time in its two
stage shining glory. An ivory white cove accentuates a spectacular
design element which works with the wide white wall tires to create
a profile that is recognized worldwide as classic. The artful
design continues on the back where inset round tail lights sit
poised in a chrome sheath and a line follows that takes in exhaust
tips that exit chrome sleeves in the bodywork. The toothed grille
and single headlights exude an excitable face, as if the car is
eager to move forward and even the fender scoops have polished
trim. And speaking of polished trim, the windshield frame outlines
the curved glass beautifully and the tan canvas top is in
impeccable condition. This is a winner and we were reluctant to
find any exterior flaws on this top tier classic.
Interior
You could hang these doors on your living room wall and people
would comment about the complex abstract art you've chosen for your
home. Stunning texture and lines and materials adorn the door
panels that are a feast for the eyes decked out in red and silver.
Some of the embossed vinyl pattern makes its way to the seat
inserts of the buckets which are surrounded by smooth and plump
stuffed red vinyl in mint condition. The red steering wheel,
flawless, and the circular speedometer tops a two tone dashboard
that caps an ivory painted base with a red rounded dash and housing
chrome ringed gauges that span the lower dash. A white knobbed
Hurst shifter is on the hump which is masterfully covered in red
material fitted to the floor and curvature. The trunk's fitted,
ribbed mat is clean as a whistle as is the rest of that space.
Drivetrain
The restoration didn't stop with the body and interior. A date
correct and spotless 283ci V8, new for '57, sits calmly in the bay
wearing a "270" on each valve cover to declare its horsepower. Twin
4-barrel carburetors rise from the intake and a Muncie M20 4-speed
manual rides piggyback to the V8, sending power to the rear wheels
and 3.70 gears with Positraction. Drum brakes are employed on all
four wheels.
Undercarriage
Well, of course, it's factory fresh underneath with exactly zero
surface rust and no real signs of this car ever being driven.
There's a single drop on the transmission casing but that's the
only fluid we see, and it would not stop us from eating off this
underside. Dual exhaust flow through stock style mufflers before
migrating to the back and suspension consists of clean coil springs
in front and clean leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Oh no, we will not be the party to get this car dirty. So we take
it around our short loop to check functionality and it performs as
it looks, cleanly. No runs, drips, or errors, as Reds catcher
Johnny Bench used to say. All operational items work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here's one for the discerning collector as its restoration has
resulted in a concours level quality we see in small numbers here
at the mall, and we see a LOT of cars. As mentioned, this is top
tier rolling perfection, an American icon that can be added to your
portfolio. You can't take Apple stock on the road on a beautiful
day, but this Vette will gladly oblige and may pay dividends as
well!
