Vehicle Description
1997 Alfa Romeo 916 Spyder
Designed in the late 1980s by Enrico Fumia at Pininfarina, the 916
Spider had a tough act to follow. It addressed the challenge with a
dramatic side-slash and huge front clamshell cleverly shrouding the
headlights, while a hard cover for the folded soft-top gave it an
exceptionally clean wedge profile. Rust worries were largely put to
rest by galvanizing the entire bodyshell, which no doubt
contributed to making the car excessively heavy and therefore not
particularly accelerative in its class. But it's a small price to
pay to avoid the rampant rot of most older Alfas.
For consignment, a true import car in that it came over from a
dealer in Holland to the US in 2022. Our consigner put about
7,000KM of the 89,288 title verified kilometers on in the last year
or so, during which time he had the recharged, new battery
installed , and it was inspected. The car comes with a full
inspection history in Dutch which resides in the glovebox.
Exterior
The overwhelming feature of this wedge shaped car is the clamshell
hood with the headlight cutouts in the round peering through the
hood. This wonderfully aero slip design also has the familiar Alfa
triangular shaped center to the hood. A neoprene bumper below has
horizontal cutouts and a dip in the top of the bumper to
accommodate the shield of the hood. Nicely rounded doors have well
minded rust free gaps and allow plenty of room for easy access no
matter what your size. The driver's side back of the hood door has
a large chip that has formed at the hood door seam. A nicely raked
windshield provides a front foundation for the black canvas
convertible top. When down this top hides neatly under a plastic
tonneau cowling. The shapely back of the car has the look of shades
of the Porsche 928 with its nicely rounded over lines and full side
to side horizontal tail light seamlessly inserted into the area
just before the bumper takes over. A black band surrounds the car
on the rockers and rear roll pan and grounds the bottom. This car
is painted in Verde Acido, (light lime green),and the paint is
showing nicely with a few areas of scratching and chipping mostly
around the wheel wells. 16-inch wheels are wrapped by 205/50ZR16
tires from 2008
Interior
White leather high back Momo buckets provide the chairs for the
passengers. These show light soiling and some discoloration in the
white. The passenger side chair is more yellowed than the driver's
side. Black carpeting floods the floors and racing between the
seats is a center console. The dash is curvy in its presentation,
and has several rounded instruments in front of the driver and in
the center rise from the console. Also affixed in this panel is an
AM/FM/CD stereo. The dash shows a bot of wear and light soiling.
Behind the seats is an additional storage area also in black
carpeting.
Drivetrain
Under that clamshell hood is a 2.0 liter twin spark 4 cylinder
engine. It has Bosch Motronic 2.10.3 EFI and a 5-speed manual
transmission on the back. The car is front wheel drive and has a
3.56 axle. The condition of the engine is slightly corroded on of
the cast aluminum parts.
Undercarriage
The suspension parts show slight surface rust, otherwise the floor
pans and unibody are looking good. Independent Macpherson struts
are in front and independent coil springs are in back. Power disc
braking is all around and these are Brembo 4 pot caliper
brakes.
Drive-Ability
I donned my wood clogs and hopped in. This car was a quick starter
with a smooth idle and peppy accelerator. It handled well and I
noticed the airbag light is lit and it pulled to the left when
driving.
Imported from Holland and not often seen here in the USofA. It is a
nifty wedge shaped design, has an interesting paint color, and
lovely clamshell and round cutouts in the hood for the headlights,
and its a snappy convertible. I'm on the hunt for a windmill or a
dike to put my thumb into. Come one down.
