Vehicle Description
1984 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas
Vanden Plas is the name of coachbuilders who produced bodies for
specialist and up-market automobile manufacturers. Latterly the
name became a top end luxury model designation for cars from
various subsidiaries of British Leyland and the Rover Group, last
used in 2009 to denote the top-luxury version of the Jaguar
XJ8.
Direct from the plant in Coventry, England, we give you a 2 owner
Vanden Plas edition of the Jaguar XJ6 sporting a mere 54,778 title
verified actualmiles. With steel panels covered in deep dark Black,
and some luxurious trappings for the interior, this car is aptly
named for the former specialist and upmarket automobile industry
manufacturer, now the name branding of the Jaguar luxury market. A
beneficiary of a restoration in 1998 where all the trim and chrome
was removed, recently redone walnut burl on the interior, rebuilt
front and rear suspension, new brakes and calipers all around, and
always serviced at Cloverleaf Auto Service, you can be sure this
leaper is ready to serve and show for many years and miles to
come.
Exterior
Very straight rust free steel panels adorn the exterior of this
car. They are covered in deep and glossy Black paint which carries
the correct coachlines, (pinstripes), and shows only minor flaws
that one must search to find. From its long front swept "bonnet"
which is flanked by aerodynamic fenders with dual round headlights
on either side and a centered grille, to its "boot", aerodynamics
were always in mind. Plenty of shiny chrome and brite work adorn
this car at the bumpers, grille, drip moldings and window
surrounds. Even polished tipped dual exhaust pipes are seen peeking
out from under the shiny rear bumper. Redone 15-inch Kent alloy
wheels adorn the corners and are wrapped in blackwall 215/70R15
radials from 2018 and 2019. Our consignor notes that a set of 4
Dayton chrome wire wheels are included with your purchase.
Brilliant!
Interior
Pop open the doors and you are met with a nice combination of new
walnut burl, straight flat designs, and classy, very slightly worn
with time, leather buckets up front. The center console houses the
power window switches, and a petite "T" shift lever reminiscent of
the '60's. Also noted are plenty of toggles, and wheeled controls
for temperature, fan speeds and air ducting. A couch-like bench
seat with 2 distinct seating areas is seen stretching across the
spacious back passenger compartment. The headliner remains tight
and clean, as is the cover for the power sunroof, and carpeting to
match seats is in good condition. A shout out to the burl dash
which is also new along with the wood rimmed Nardi wheel. Bob's
your uncle!
Drivetrain
A 4.2 Liter DOHC inline 6 sits comfortably in the nicely presenting
engine bay. It is fed a fuel and air mixture Lucas/Bosch L Jetronic
EFI. Attached to the back of this engine is a BW-66 3-speed
automatic transmission that shifts smoothly. The rear axle shows in
2.88 gear configuration. Our consignor notes that the cold start
injector and fuel line was recently replaced along with a new water
pump, belts, hoses and ignition wires.
Undercarriage
Clean, rust free, and sturdy, and covered in an undercoat, no signs
of any invasive rust here. Power disc brakes for all 4 corners, as
well as independent coil springs all around and single piped to
dual outlet exhaust. We note new lower ball joints, sway bar
bushings and links, and steering rack mounts on the front end along
with a fully rebuilt rear suspension and resealed axle. Our
consignor states that the brakes front and rear have been redone
along with a new master cylinder being installed.
Drive-Ability
Hopping in and it fired right up and on the test track it performed
well with adequate acceleration, a smooth ride and almost sports
car like handling. All was functioning well during our drive with
the exception of the AC blowing cool but not cold, the trip
computer being disconnected and the speed control not working.
A taste of luxury and Jaguar power, this classic saloon starts
quickly, shifts smoothly, and puts on a nice showing dressed in its
"cracking", (not cracked!), black with nice chrome. Interior has
creature comforts, and a new walnut dash panel with plenty of
gauges and toggle switches. Early British luxury with a very smooth
ride and we cannot forget this cat was 1 of 30 cars accepted to the
2024 Philadelphia Concours D'eleganceheld at the Simeone Foundation
Automotive Museum...now put that in your pipe and smoke it.
