History
As an alternate to Cadillac's convertibles and those from Chrysler's Imperial, Ford produced the top-of-its-class four-door Lincoln Continental Convertible. Of the Elwood Engel-designed fourth-generation Continentals, the 1961-1964 models are among the most sought after because of their clean and simply elegant design.
For those of you unfamiliar with Gen 4 Lincolns, the 1964 Lincoln Continental was factory equipped with a 430ci V8 engine, of the Mercury, Edsel and Lincoln line (MEL)
rated at 340 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque with power routed to the rear wheels through a rebuilt dual-range Ford turbo-drive three speed automatic transmission and a rear axle with 2.89:1 gearing.
Only 3,328 Continental convertibles were built in 1964, and that year’s model refresh included a longer 126-inch wheelbase, chrome vertical grille accents, a revised rear deck-lid trim panel, and a relocated fuel filler door on the left quarter panel amongst other improvements. Most notable were larger rear doors and the addition of 4 inches of leg room for rear seat passengers, resulting in an opulent roominess that is quite remarkable.
