One of the longer-running nameplates ever sold in North America,
Mercedes-Benz's C107 and R107 coupes and convertibles, ran for
nearly 20 years. A local consignment has owned and cared for the
car since 2014 - 10 years.
This example, made in the company's Sindelfingen assembly plant in
West Germany in January 1988 looks good even though it's
approaching 40 years of age. There's a power-folding fabric top,
dark brown in color (code 592).
The car's Signal Red (code 568) paint and trim are in overall very
good condition with minor belmishes. It looks a stunt double for
Jennifer Hart's car in the classic TV drama, "Hart to Hart"
starring Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers. The car's bodywork is
straight and solid, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. The
body-matching hardtop looks good.
This Benz rolls on Michelin radials, size 205/65R15 at all four
corners. Each one is mounted to a factory alloy wheel. The wheels
and tires are all in very good order.
Under the hood is a 5.6L SOHC 16-valve V-8 engine (code M117) with
Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection. Backing this motor is a 4G-TRONIC
four-speed automatic transmission (code W4A 040). Driver
convenience equipment includes electronic climate control (code
581); outside temperature indicator (code 240); power and heated
sideview mirrors (code 506); Becker Mexico electronic radio (code
519); and power antenna (code 531). Other items include power
recirculating ball steering, power windows, power locks and cruise
control.
Safety equipment includes a driver's side airbag (code 442),
four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock and a rear window defroster
(code 592).
Inside, the car's Palomino leather interior (code 274) looks
inviting. The bucket seats are fitted in leather and are in very
good order. The matching carpet is in satisfactory order and the
hardtop's headliner looks good. The driver's seat has a front
folding armrest (code 570). The usual deep-dish Mercedes four-spoke
steering wheel faces the driver. The dash has a black cap atop it
then changes to Palomino like the rest of the interior. The dash,
interior door panels and center console all look great. A
console-mounted shift lever and a Becker Mexico Grand Prix
electronic stereo (code 519) round out the interior. The odometer
is sporadic and power antenna is inop.
Droptop competition to this Benz in 1988 included Aston Martin's
Vantage Volante, Chevrolet's Corvette, Excalibur's Series V
Phaeton, Saab's 900 Turbo Cabriolet and Stutz's Bearcat II
Convertible.
