The BTR marked the beginning of RUF as a manufacturer in its own
right, establishing itself as the most highly regarded of all the
Porsche tuning companies. The BTR was inspired by the FIA Group B
regulations of the time, a 930 Turbo was used as a basis to compete
with the fastest products from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche
itself. The BTR was routinely regarded as the fastest accelerating
road car at the time. The BTR utilized a 930 turbo engine bored to
3.4 liters and then fitted with Mahle pistons, RUF 935-type
camshafts, RUF intercooler, Stage 3 Motronic injection (rather than
original CIS injection) and a larger KKK turbo. This resulted in a
power output of 374 bhp at standard boost pressure of .09 bar.
Various enhancements include: RUF sport steering wheel, RUF Seats,
RUF gauges, RUF Branded Porsche 917 Derived Brakes, RUF Suspension,
RUF specific 17-inch Speedline Wheels, RUF front spoiler, RUF Aero
Side View Mirrors, RUF quad-pipe sport muffler, RUF shift Knob, RUF
Pedals, RUF five-speed gearbox, Matter roll cage as used by Porsche
Racing and a Modern Porsche PCCM head unit-new speakers.
This particular 930 Turbo has led and incredibly colorful
life-lifestyle to date. It was owned in the early 1990's by
well-known and respected Porsche collector, Mr. Oscar Velez, Puerto
Rico, USA. Mr. Velez, also the owner of Servicio Euromecanico
decided to covert his 930 to RUF BTR specifications. Having
contacted RUF Germany, the process began. RUF Germany flew its
technicians with all of the necessary parts to Puerto Rico to
convert his Oak Green 930 to RUF BTR specifications. The engine was
built to 3.4 liter, the CIS injection removed in favor of RUF
Motronic injection which was a system used on the Porsche racing
962's, but modified for street purposes. At this time and although,
the cylinder heads were converted to twin-plug for just a bit of
extra efficiency. The gearbox installed by the technicians is a RUF
Porsche G64 964 5-speed gearbox as labelled by RUF on the casing
and as modified internally and externally for fitment to a 930
Turbo of this era. The result is the 930 Turbo RUF BTR Conversion
on offer today and well-known as "El Hulk" due to it exceptional,
original Oak Green metallic color and menacing stance.
Circa 2020, "El Hulk" was purchased from Mr. Velez by a well-known
Miami USA dealer Peter Lima who has an affinity for both RUF and DP
tuned Porsches. In 2022, "El Hulk" was purchased by Mr. Randy
Tillman, Virginia, USA. Mr. Tillman noticed several oil leaks and
proceeded to have the engine rebuild by a Porsche technician while
"El Hulk" was still located in Florida. When completed, "El Hulk"
was transported to Mr. Tillman's residence in Virginia for his use
and enjoyment. At this time, "El Hulk" looked after by Virginia
based IMA Motorwerke, known for their Porsche maintenance and race
prep.
During 2023, the original Motronic injection unit had failed.
Rather than replace the Motornic system with what had had become
quite antiquated and not readily available, it was decided to use a
completely programmable, modern Motec Motronic injection unit. At
this time, the Turbo was replaced with a more efficient Garrett
GT35 turbo and an electronic dash mounted boost controller and
twin-wastegates used to control the turbos boost pressure. When run
on the IMA Motorwerke dyno, "El Hulk" produced 527 HP @ 1.2 bar
boost and where limited. Now knowing the power output for this
short burst, it was the electronic boost controller to .09 bar
which will produces more than adequate horsepower, but also to
ensure the safety of the engine.
In late 2023 and the unfortunate passing of Mr. Tillman, "El Hulk"
was consigned to auction by the estate. "El Hulk" was purchased at
auction by none other than Peter Lima who having owned "El Hulk" in
the past had intimate knowledge of its history and condition.
Subsequently, "El Hulk" was sold to a good friend and client of
Autosport Designs, Inc. While in his care, "El Hulk" was given to
Stahl Motorsports of West Palm Beach for thorough servicing. The
engine and gearbox were removed, servicing included, new oil lines,
valve adjustment, gaskets, spark plugs, the gearbox was resealed
and various other items received service-maintenance, including:
The suspension received new ball joints, new Turbo tie-rod ends,
new front wheel bearings, handbrake brake pads, a new Porsche rear
center reflector and new steering column bushing.
The most recent owner of "El Hulk" a resident of both Manhattan and
Southampton New York has decided to relocate for most of the
calendar year to Palm Beach, Florida, USA. Having quite a few
exceptional automobiles in his collection and now becoming a
Florida resident, let's just say, "El Hulk" is not the automobile
of choice to cruise over to Palm Beaches Worth Avenue with his wife
for lunch or dinner. Therefore, "El Hulk" has been traded to
Autosport Designs, Inc. towards a significant Aston Martin which
has enough horsepower to pull a home off its foundation, but which
is far better suited to his new Floridian lifestyle, and which can
be driven anywhere in comfort, opulence as well as
climate-controlled comfort.
A Porsche 930 is sure to put a grin on your face, a 930, converted
to RUF BTR specification is sure to make that grin, that much
larger. This is pure enjoyment as only Porsche and RUF can supply.
Ready for immediate use and enjoyment, this RUF BTR is a welcomed
addition to any collection of rare-limited production
automobiles.
