Vehicle Description
1977 Dodge Adventurer SE 150 Short Bed Pickup
"The popular Dodge conventional cab pickup is destined to be more
popular than ever this year. That's because, like all Dodge pickups
for '77, it combines proven Dodge durability advantages with new
features that offer even more value for the money. New front end
styling, for example, that includes a bright, new grille and nine
exterior colors, new options such as smart wheel covers, full
length body side moulding, (sic), and Sky Lite roof. Plus new
interior style; striking Adventurer SE, Adventurer, and Custom
interiors that set new standards for truck trim." From the 1977
Dodge Truck brochure.
For consignment, a 1977 Dodge Adventurer SE 150 short bed pickup
truck, showing 6,306 miles which are non actual. The original sales
brochure is wonderfully simple, showing tough Dodge pickups in a
variety of settings in which you might find yourself. On top of a
cliff carrying your hang glider, on the coastline with a bed cap
that offers a camping opportunity, on a construction job site, and
finally, a black Warlock edition whose driver is conversing with
some young ladies on motorcycles. Dodge also offered the heavier
duty Ramcharger in '77, but the Adventurer provided the preferred
pedestrian adventure.
Exterior
That bright grille Dodge talks about is instantly recognizable as
it spans the width and puts vertical marker lights to the inside of
the round headlights, and they share a bezel. There are hints of
body color up front but a large chrome bumper underscores the
grille and takes up front real estate and all of this metalwork is
in great condition. There's plenty of color in profile and in this
case, it's a shade of brown known as Russet Poly, fitting for the
era, and looking good on the square body and bed of the truck. The
wide side molding carries from the front to that back and takes in
the wheels surround trim in a clean presentation while the tailgate
is dominated by a full trim panel with a geometric design that is
epic 70's. While in back, we note a clean rear bumper with flat
edges and square design over dual exhaust chrome tips. 15-inch
chrome wheels accentuate the truck and carry 70 series tires, and a
vinyl tonneau smooths out the bed covering a clean, body colored
space. The only imperfections are a few bubbles down low on the
truck.
Interior
"Trucks never had it so stylish!" proclaims the brochure, and for
this period of time, it's hard to argue! The door panels are a,
yes, luxurious compilation of rich, black vinyl over a carpeted
kick panel and surrounding a dark woodgrain center section where
the black grains of the wood aplenty seamlessly with the truck's
interior palette. Black bucket seats flank a kid-friendly jumper
seat in the middle and all are in very good shape. Wood grain
adorns the steering wheel center and the dash itself as a plastic
panel where four small gauges sit to the side of the speedometer
and the AM/FM/Cassette player to the right, followed by a
tachometer rather roughly added. The floor is covered with black
loop carpet and a textured panel in the ceiling serves as the
headliner, also in decent condition along with smooth visors.
Drivetrain
A relatively clean engine is found in the bay and it's a 360ci V8
with a 2-barrel carburetor and an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed
automatic transmission back it up and sending power to the 8 inch
rear. This truck has power steering and air conditioning along with
power brakes as front disc and rear drums.
Undercarriage
Sufficiently clean underneath with the typical appearance of
surface rust on certain components. Since the gas tank is on the
left side, the dual exhaust runs in tandem to the right of the
driveshaft and travels through glasspack style mufflers before
splitting to go around the spare tire and head out the back, split
wide. A drop of oil on the pan and only residual oil is found on
the transmission pan and the rest of the underside is dry and free
of debris. Suspension is fairly standard with coil springs up front
and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
Utilitarian simplicity is met with a touch of woodgrain luxury,
(albeit faux wood), and this produces a comfortable cabin with
narrow pillars and lots of window space making for great
visibility. The 360 starts up without issue and carries us onto the
test loop where the truck runs fine, tracks well on those tall
tires, and handles with the gentle roll of trucks from this era.
When vehicles are simple like this, that can only mean one thing.
Less to break! And indeed, all of the functional items in the truck
work as intended save for the tachometer not tracking rpm's and we
did note a slight miss in the engine. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.'
What once was common and unexceptional is now cool in its austerity
and what a '77 lacks in creature comforts, it gains in
uncomplicated but stylish interiors and rugged steel exteriors.
This was before plastic became dominant trim and there's a strong
permanence to metal that plastic just can't duplicate. A great
period color, a clean interior, a fine V8, and a covered and clean
bed make this Dodge pickup one to have! Are you ready for your
personal adventure? Get in on this brown beauty!
