Vehicle Description
1998 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 Coupe
A beloved symbol of 1970s car culture. An icon of disco era design.
A redneck's red letter regalia. It's gaudy. Garish. Tacky. Even
vulgar. And we love it. This is the story of Pontiac's Screaming
Chicken, the largest and most recognizable decal in automotive
history. Lost to time is the name of the man that first referred to
the graphic as a "Screaming Chicken." The nickname came quickly. By
the late 1970s, even Car and Driver was using the label. No doubt
derogatory, over time the epithet has become one of endearment,
although the brand's hardest purists still hate it. That bunch
landed on "hood bird" four decades ago and refused to budge. Others
go with "Rising Phoenix" or simply "Firebird." The ignorant usually
refer to the massive flaming fowl as an Eagle or a Hawk.
For consignment, originally from our friends up north in the St.
Therese, Canada assembly plant, this sculpted, aerodynamic T-topped
muscle car. With its low original miles, the WS6 version has a mere
68,895 title verified clicks on the clock. A consignor stated
garage kept, mostly original version of the beloved Trans Am, and
all in showroom condition.
Exterior
All dressed up in Darth Vader black, from the 2 bumps at the front
of the fenders that magically turn into headlights, to the Ram Air
intake cowling hood flanked by 2 front fender bumps, and more
intake inlets on the quarter panels, to the severely raked
windscreen, to the rear trunk lid that seems to go on forever as it
becomes an integrated spoiler. All in nice condition, and the
optional T-tops are with this car. We note the addition of white
decal stripes on the bump ups of the ram air hood that are led by
white screaming chickens. These stripes pause for the roof and pick
up again on the hatch, running under the aerodynamic spoiler.
Special upgraded factory WS6 wheels in 17-inch format are seen on
all 4's and wear deepy treaded tires with a 2021 manufactuing date.
Our consignor notes that the paint was corrected and treated to a 5
year ceramic coat 1 year ago.
Interior
Dark gray leather covers the front power buckets, with the driver's
being power adjustable, the rear 2 plus 2 bench, and steering
wheel, as well as the white Hurst ball topped gearshift. Leather is
soft and supple, showing only very minor folds or errors. A
swooping center console is flanked by the buckets and makes its way
to the dash while including a glove box/armrest, cup holder,
gearshift, climate controls, and a Monsoon AM/FM/Cassette player
with equalizer. The normal cluster instruments are clean and
bright. Nice matching gray carpet floods the floor.
Drivetrain
A 5.7 liter LS1 V8 is found within the engine bay and is
electronically fuel injected. The T56 6-speed manual transmission
is bolted to the back, and these in combination make use of the
10-bolt 3.42 rear axle ratio and Positraction and this in turn
allows the tires to spin and make the black marks on the
pavement!
Undercarriage
The undercarriage is showroom with no dirt or scratched paint.
Power front and rear disc brakes are on all the corners, and this
car comes equipped with independent front coil spring suspension
and a torque arm and coil springs in the rear. Dual to single to
dual tailpipe exhaust is accentuated with a Magnaflow muffler.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up, and instantly came into a wonderful
burbling idle. Smooth shifting, nice power and great ride as well
as interior comfort. One gets the feeling of driving a piece of
sculpture with all the inlets and curved cowlings etc. Overall, a
great driver like new with all functions operating as they should.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A low mileage well cared for example of the modern style Trans Am.
Aerodynamically designed and performance enhanced to be reliably
driven, hassle free. Press the button, open up the top panels and
make some marks on the pavement!
