on www.carcaveusa.com.The BMW Isetta is now a highly sought-after
classic car. This microcar from Munich combines an intelligent
concept with the elegance of simplicity, representing a truly
futuristic design for its time. Known for its distinctive egg shape
and bubble-like windows, it earned the nickname 'bubble car,' a
term also used for similar vehicles of the era.Initially
manufactured by the Italian firm Iso SpA, the name Isetta is
derived from the Italian diminutive of Iso, meaning 'little Iso.'
BMW introduced several key changes to the original design. While
the Italian version had only three wheels, the German version
rolled off the factory floor with four. The Isetta quickly captured
the hearts of Germans, selling 10,000 units in its first year
alone, and its popularity soon spread to other countries. Over the
course of eight years, a total of 161,728 units were sold, making
it one of the best-selling single-cylinder cars in the world.
However, by 1962, the era of small bubble cars came to an end as
rising prosperity shifted consumer demand toward more luxurious
vehicles. Our BMW Isetta is the 250 model, finished in the elegant
shade of Cortina Grau. This particular example was purchased in
Italy. Having owned several Isettas in the past, we love having
them around?they offer a unique driving experience and look
absolutely charming. This example underwent an older restoration
and remains in excellent condition. It was repainted in its
original color, which still presents well, complemented by a
healthy, solid body. The interior is not only period-correct but
also delightfully nostalgic, carrying a subtle vintage aroma?a
hallmark of classic cars that enthusiasts cherish. During its
restoration, the seat was reupholstered in plaid cloth, which looks
fantastic. Most of the other interior details appear to be
original, a quality we deeply appreciate, as originality can only
be preserved once.Driving this Isetta is an experience in itself.
With just 12 bhp, it's not designed for drag races, but that's part
of its charm. It's the perfect car for leisurely drives around town
or through the countryside on a sunny summer day with your partner.
Its unique driving position and lively single-cylinder engine are
guaranteed to put a smile on your face at every turn.Mechanically,
this Isetta is ready for many more miles of enjoyment. During its
restoration, the engine was thoroughly serviced and now runs
beautifully, while the gearbox shifts smoothly. The brakes were
overhauled by the previous owner, so stopping power is assured.
We've given this Isetta our seal of approval after performing
additional work, including replacing the points, fuel tap, spark
plug, and windshield wiper. She's now ready to start her next
chapter with a new owner!
