This beautiful 1970 Honda Z50 AK2 Mini Trail 50 has been restored to show quality standards utilizing many NOS parts. The Honda Z series or Monkey Bikes was a line of minibikes made by Honda which have a model number starting with the letter Z. The bike came to be known as a monkey bike because those riding them “looked like monkeys”. The original model of the Honda Z-series was the 1961 prototype Honda Z100, originally produced as a children's ride at the Tama Tech Japanese amusement park. It was eventually put into mass production, hitting the European market in 1964. From the information gathered this example was the product of a complete restoration which was completed in 2023. It was purchased by MS CLASSIC CARS in October of 2024 and November of 2024 is the first time it's been listed for sale.
This Z50 presents like a fresh build and is at a higher level of quality than most Z50's on the market for sale. The original frame was stripped, prepped and painted the correct color of Mexican Yellow. The paint work is high quality throughout with a few minor chips. The twist-lock folding handlebars, grips and levers appear to be original. A headlight switch is also attached to the handlebars. The original gas tank was also stripped, prepped and painted in the colors of Silver and Yellow. It was decorated with a new gas cap and emblems. The headlight bucket and forks were also painted yellow. The headlight bucket was decorated with a new emblem and the forks were decorated with original reflectors. The front and rear chrome fenders are original pieces that are in very good condition with minor wear. It was outfitted with new black upholstery on the seat and a new rear tail light assembly. The license plate bracket appears to be original and restored. It appears the front and rear braking parts are original including the rear foot brake lever. It rolls on two-piece 8” steel wheels that are wrapped with new Bridgestone Trail Wing-2 3.50-8 tires.
The 49cc four-stroke single engine was reportedly rebuilt at the time of the restoration. It was repainted in the correct colors of silver and black. The engine features a kick starter and was factory rated with two horsepower. The Keihin carburetor appears original and has a Z50 stamping. The engine breathes through a new correct chrome exhaust model #103 – Patten #3407575. The bike routes power to the rear wheel through a three-speed semi-automatic transmission and a drive chain with new chrome chain guard.
Based on the frame serial number this example was a late built 1970 Z50 AK2 model. Based on the engine number it's correct for the year but was built in early 1970 for a Z50 AK1 model.
