Vehicle Description
1989 Cadillac Fleetwood S&S Hearse
One hundred and thirty years is a long time to be in business. And
it's particularly notable if the company in question manufactures
the oldest brand in a highly competitive and specialized field.
This longevity takes on added distinction when that company has
also been the industry leader for the greater part of its
existence. Such is the honor of The S&S Coach Company.
I had to dig deep, (at least 6 feet under), to get the life and
legend of this consignment showing up with 71,975 title verified
actual miles. To wit I give you a 1989 version of an S&S
Fleetwood hearse. Our version we note by the pictures, has the
design of a rectangle and square motif, and presents in reasonably
nicely preserved condition. Lets dig further into this one way
ticket traveler out of the late 80's, as I know if you are
interested or curious, you are just dying for more info.
Exterior
Time has treated our beloved cargo car well and it has led a
charmed life. A Caddy Fleetwood chassis and body design has plenty
of unmarred steel, along with some panels that show underlying rust
and paint scraped, but hey that's life. Shiny chrome for the front
bumper grille and headlight surrounds, and some peeled chrome for
the rear, and of course the well padded black vinyl back of the
car. Out of respect for those who have passed, I'll only provide
the facts and we can start with reasonable silver paint for the
hood and side panels. The hood is adorned with a coffin-esque
ornament, and part of the dual headlights of rectangle design are
blacked out. The car has plenty of adornments to take with it like
side chandeliers, landau bars, (purely ornamentation but harkening
back to the top down hearse carriages), and side window badges that
are a bit tongue in cheek calling themselves ENDOLINE. A dead
giveaway to the Cadillac class for that final journey are the
15-inch chromed wire wheels wrapped in 215/75R15's.
Interior
The interior is nothing but dead serious luxury with padded pleated
door panels featuring faux wood and chrome window, seat and mirror
controls and a courtesy light. All in deep blue leather to match my
current mood. Front seats are overstuffed leather buckets with tuck
and roll inserts and smooth bolsters, along with an embossed Caddy
crest in their uppers. A standard dash is pure GM with blue vinyl,
and some more faux wood grain for the instrument and other
accessory surrounds. From the front portion forward, it's all for
the paying customer with a flat deck and carpeted with pleated
curtain side windows for the coffin. Beautiful church windows are
on padded side panels near the rear of the car next to the swinging
gate complete with cross and some faux flowers. OH God!
Drivetrain
Lie still as we are about to find out what powers this behemoth and
indeed it is full of life in the form of a 305ci V8. It has a
lively single 4-barrel carb and a smooth 200R4 4-speed automatic
will speed you to your end destination. All fairly clean and
looking alive and slightly aged.
Undercarriage
Underside is rust free, and painted black. In front independent
coil springs are giving the ride and bringing up the rear is a 4
link with coil spring setup. Power discs and power drums
respectively and a 10 bolt 2.79 gear ratio is on the pumpkin.
Drive-Ability
I was dead serious when I took my test drive, and thankfully was in
the front of the car. All showed fine with smooth acceleration,
solid braking bringing me to a dead stop, and smooth shifting on
the way up the speedo. I found the AC was not operational and a
persistent "check engine" light was illuminated. Maybe a sign from
above? While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Let us "Urn" your business with this example from the late 80's and
a last gasp before everything turned slippery and aero looking.
Fairly well preserved with some areas of need on the exterior
cometic side. This one has a definite "Do Not Pass" sign on it as a
looker amongst many other classics all lying in state within our
hallowed halls. With this I'll bid you a final adieu.
