Vehicle Description
1984 Pontiac Fiero Sport Coupe
"Remember, the stated justification for the Fiero was that it be a
relatively high volume, economical commuter car. At that, they have
succeeded admirably. Now they can spend a couple of years tuning it
with option packages to satisfy the closet racer. The potential is
exciting. They have all the pieces in the right places, so someone
just has to come along with slightly better pieces. If there are
people out there who regret not having bought, (and kept), one of
the first 1953 Corvettes, this is a second chance." Road and Track,
September 1983.
For consignment, a 1984 Pontiac Fiero with a title verified 57,943
actual miles. An original example of a first year Fiero, the unique
mid engine platform and rear wheel drive of the Fiero made it
revolutionary and its origins are based on this inaugural model. As
one time daily commuters, surviving low mileage examples are on a
rising trajectory of collectability.
Exterior
Our plastic bodied car is finished in White, still single stage in
1984, and only one of two colors available early in production,
along with red. Of course, this is accented by black features that
include midline body molding that encircles the car, side mirrors,
flush bumper covers front and rear, a faux air duct on the rear
quarter, B-pillar trim, and the smoked tail lights Pontiac was keen
on using. This little wedge boasts a raked windshield and a
dramatic forward leaning C-pillar which envelopes the rear grille
with flying buttress-like structures, housing a perfectly vertical
rear window. The 14-inch wheels are quintessentially 80's and wear
215/60R14's with a mid 2021 date code. On the nose, the Fiero badge
with hints of Ferrari, Lamborghini, but portraying the bird's eye
view of a Pegasus, the Fiero's original name, and designed with a
nod to the Trans Am's screaming eagle. Imperfections include some
filled holes down low, and some stress cracking in the paint.
Interior
We swing the doors and see the 2 buckets covered in tan cloth,
sporty and supportive and equipped with speakers in the headrest. A
large wide center console is between the buckets and houses a large
storage compartment, the shift lever and window toggles. Taking the
square and rectangle design motif to the max, the dash is made up
of a series of squares and rectangles on a brushed nickel
background with an array of indicator lights and standard gauges.
It's here we note a cracked area in the brown plastic surround.
Carrying the angular idea to the edges where the A/C and heat vents
are also on their own vertical blocks on either side along with a
JVC AM/FM/CD player. Clean door panels are two tone light tan
plastic over brown carpeted inserts, and that carpet is carried
over to the floor, blending the interior tones nicely, while an
overhead console with lights attaches to the headliner covered in
fleece like material around a sunroof.
Drivetrain
Under the rear panel, we find the 2.5 liter four cylinder
powerplant rated at 92 horsepower and fueled by a 1-barrel
carburetor. It's clean, driver quality in appearance with spots of
surface rust on metal parts. Meanwhile a 4-speed manual is attached
and keeps power at the rear with 3.32 gears. Power disc brakes are
on board and supplied to each of the four wheels.
Undercarriage
Decidedly driver quality underneath with a decent amount of surface
rust and general use patina. There's a drop or two of oil on the
pan, but the rest of the underside appears dry. A single exhaust
flows through a stock style muffler and out through twin tips,
while front and rear suspension are independent.
Drive-Ability
Since we're not entirely unfamiliar with the sports car profile,
sitting low in a little car is in our wheelhouse. There's actually
a decent amount of interior space in the car and ergonomics, for a
car of the 80's, is pretty good. Off we went to our test loop where
it performed well with good handling, smooth shifting, and as much
pep as we could muster from the four banger, which is plenty for
country road cruising and city driving. The reverse lights are not
working, but all other functions on this well preserved sports car
worked as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
It would be 36 years before Fiero's big brother, the Corvette,
would see the light and throw the engine towards the back. The
advantage? A better balanced car for improved handling and agility.
In that way, the Fiero was revolutionary and the first year model
will always be the original. Here's an opportunity to own a nice
example in very good condition. Hop on your flying horse and make
the call today!
