Vehicle Description
1970 Dodge Super Bee Hardtop
"The "new for 1970" Dodge Coronet featured front end styling that
was rather unique to say the least. The styling department gave the
car a daring facelift that incorporated dual loop bumpers that
surrounded twin grilles, which people seemed to either love or
hate. It was strange to be sure; however, today it's cherished by
many!" thx Dodgegarage.com
For consignment, a 1970 Dodge Super Bee, a car with a numbers
matching transmission and a long options list that includes
everything from roof drip rail moldings to 3 speed wipers to bucket
seats. And speaking of seats, take one, because we've got a lot to
dissect here.
Exterior
Featured in Go Mango orange, the Coronet based Super Bee wears
impossible to miss hood scoops, gaping intakes split wide, and they
do take your attention from the unique hooped grille surrounds that
expressed the period's frequent usage of big metal on front fascia.
The cartoonish Super Bee logo is poised on the nose and hood pins
keep that wind catching lid from taking off. The B-body platform in
this era means big body panels and in profile, this car wears the
reverse-C stripe that travels all the way to the door edge, in
effect shrinks the appearance of the stretched rear quarter and it
culminates with a large Super Bee decal, the wheeled and helmeted
angry insect. The rear fascia is appropriately intimidating since
that's the aggressive, dual exhaust rear most competitors will see,
along with the flat plane of the decklid that's a sea of orange.
15-inch Cragar wheels wear a set of staggered size tires while a
white vinyl top flows down over the C-pillars which surround the
sloping rear window, the bottom edge of which is curved like few
other cars and filled with a unique piece of glass. Glass,
metalwork, and paint are fantastic and one paint chip is the only
imperfection we could find on the outside.
Interior
Stitch patterned white vinyl door panels are topped with smooth
white painted headers and trimmed with a polished mid-panel strip.
Tall white bucket seats flank the center console and present in
nice condition while the rear bench in the same style and
condition. The rim of the brown plastic steering wheel is cracked
through in several places leaving the new owner with some options
in terms of replacement or restoration. By 2024 standards, the dash
is a simple affair with a clock and speedometer large and off
center and four monitoring gauges to the right of center, all
framed in a faux woodgrain dashboard that continues in various
panels across the dash, taking in a modern AM/FM/CD radio. The
lower dash is textured black plastic and the dashpad is covered in
a fitted carpeted mat. In the center, the console is also a
combination of woodgrain and black and houses the ever iconic Hurst
pistol grip shifter and this one is wired with a little red button.
Standard black loop carpet below our feet and a nice white
headliner up above, while in the trunk, gleaming orange paint
prevails along with a plaid vinyl mat cut to fit.
Drivetrain
Glorious and clean, we find the 383ci V8, rated at 335 horsepower
and fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. Behind it, the original
numbers matching A833 4-speed manual transmission that routes power
to the Dana 60 axle in back. Standard disc brakes reside up front
with drums in the back.
Undercarriage
Clean but not showy is how we find the underside the car with
minimal surface rust. We find some residual oil on the rear
differential which has a nice polished cover, and on the
transmission pan. Headers beget dual exhaust which hit an H-pipe
before encountering a pair of stock style muffler, then out to the
back, exiting via oval chrome tips. Suspension consists of torsion
bars in front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
The 383 fired right up and with a muscle car growl we hit the test
loop. You can't go wrong with a white interior in an orange beast
and this one delivers on all counts. Great acceleration, stupendous
straight tracking, and gobs of visibility through pillarless side
windows. The satisfaction of gazing over those two ramcharger
intakes is worth the price of admission, but the rest of this big
B-body is icing on the cake. During our short journey, we note
everything in good working order. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If you've made it to this paragraph, you probably have serious
interest in this legendary Mopar. Even non-car people can recognize
a special car when they see it and this one has zero subtleness.
The big stripe, the dual exhaust, the bulging hood, and that eye
searing color makes every head turn. This bright star blazes like
the center of the solar system and if you don't want attention, buy
a Camry. But if this is your thing, make like an orange and peel
out to the telephone before you get squeezed out of the deal!
