Few automobiles have had quite as much impact as Ford's Mustang. A sales sensation from the moment of its initial announcement, it is no wonder the company's executives looked for any manner to capitalize on their new product. While Ford offered a variety of performance options including a 271hp V8, dedicated enthusiasts clamored for additional power and improved handling. Shelby American was more than happy to provide with their introduction of the track-bred GT350 in 1965. Naturally, Ford (and most buyers) requested the car be made somewhat more civilized for road use. Thusly, a number of changes for 1966 including a rear seat, an automatic transmission, and other luxury features became available.

In addition, in a move that has become one of the more memorable marketing exercises of the period, Shelby reached a deal with Hertz to offer a fleet of 1,001 GT350-Hs for their rental customers as part of their new Sports Car Club. Cleverly, this allowed prospective customers to take what what amounted to paid test drives ($17 per day and 17¢ per mile). The vast majority of these were ordered in Raven Black with Gold stripes, though small numbers were produced in other combinations. Today, any GT350 is a collectible, but the GT350-Hs are particularly notable for their rarity and unique story.

The spectacular 1966 Shelby GT350-H Fastback featured here is finished in gorgeous Wimbledon White with Gold stripes over a Black interior. Only eight examples were produced in this highly desirable color combination out of only 915 offered with an automatic transmission. Finished in February 1966, this investment-grade Shelby GT350-H was shipped to Shelby American from the San Jose assembly plant. Once the basic Shelby touches had been applied, the car was sent to Hi-Performance Motors to have the AM radio installed on March 5, 1966.

From there, the car was shipped to Brondes Motor Sales, Inc. of Toledo, Ohio, where it was received a few days later. It was given a quick dealer prep before arriving at the Hertz facility in the Toledo Express Airport in nearby Swanton, Ohio. The invoice to Hertz was $3,514. In 1967, Hertz retired this GT350-H from service and sold it to its first and thus far only private owner. Today, this Wimbledon White fastback shows just 35,783 miles and is among one of the best examples to come to market in years. Offered to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price!
