Vehicle Description
1965 Plymouth Sport Fury
"Zero in on performance, inside and out style, and a feel for
luxury that lets you know this is your car. Take a trial spin down
the road and snuggle back in bucket seat comfort as you go. Wander
off on a bumpy road and see how little difference it makes to your
riding pleasure. Back in town, be a little modest as you get
admiring glances from those who haven't driven the '65 Sports Fury
yet." From the 1965 Plymouth Fury sale catalog.
For consignment, a 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury, a car with all of the
best attributes of the mid-60's, donning a black coat and nearly
600 horsepower of clean, V8 goodness under the hood and showing
53,418 non-verifiable miles on the odometer.
Exterior
Black as night but containing enough polished trim to frame a small
house, the Fury makes a noteworthy impression with a front leaning
fascia that is an intricate assembly of lines, shapes, and bezels
surrounding stacked round headlights, the position of which cause a
slight raise in the top fender that is split by the hood gap. That
means the hood itself is particularly wide and is capped by
PLYMOUTH lettering on the nose and an ornament to crown it all. In
profile, the triangular shape of the C-pillar is distinct as it
reduces in size where it meets the body and creates a sharp angle
to the back windows. Meanwhile, a bold body trim piece runs the
length of the car, almost like a stripe and is accented by red,
white, and blue strips on the front quarter panel, something Fury's
would have in some form for years and often in different places on
the car. The rear fascia consists of a stainless panel between what
were basic taillights in 1965, but muscular in their simplicity in
2024. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels are the perfect addition to add even
more muscle to this car which has a slight rake which all of the
unique lines on the panels adhere to. The paint, gaps, and
brightwork is excellent and we could not find any exterior glaring
flaws.
Interior
Of all the American cars of this era, there's something just a bit
extra about Plymouths and as it happens, the Sport Fury was the top
trim level. Black vinyl and plastic door panels are tidy and well
designed and like the exterior, are home to plenty of decorative
metal trim. Ribbed low back buckets seats are also somewhat
intricate and the rear seats include a contoured area around
Plymouth's red, white, and blue denotation. A full horn ring
resides on the steering wheel on a chrome column that leads to a
stunning dashboard highlighted by a large square speedometer. Move
over, Tesla, this is a big display! It's flanked by a series of
well positioned gauges, switches, and knobs, a clock, and an AM
radio, along with chrome rimmed vents throughout. Four aftermarket
gauges are mounted under the dash, just in front of a woodgrain
covered center console with robust black knobbed shifter. Black
loop carpet covers the floor along with Fury branded mats and along
with the headliner, is in excellent condition. A period type plaid
mat serves as the trunk liner in this clean and voluminous cargo
hold.
Drivetrain
There's lots of room in this clean engine bay and lots of it has
been taken up by a 489ci stroker V8 with a dyno proven at 572
horsepower. Edelbrock heads help create the horsepower and it's
fueled by a Quickfuel 750cfm 4-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock
intake manifold. Behind it, an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power to the 8 rear. SSBS front power disc
brakes are on board along with power drum brakes in the back.
Undercarriage
Fantastically clean and dry underneath. Absolutely no complaints
under here. Show ready. The dual exhaust runs from the headers,
meet an H-pipe, then continue into a pair of Dynomax mufflers
before finding their wide mouthed way to the back where they exit
discreetly under the rear bumper. The suspension configuration is
torsion bars up front and rear springs.
Drive-Ability
It's fury and its sport wrapped up in a glorious black package that
roars to life with the turn of the key. This time machine takes us
back to '65 and does so in a hurry, with ridiculous power underfoot
and straight tracking, this is mid-60's greatness. And style. And
in very nice condition. All functions worked as they should, and we
trotted this beast of a luxury sport coupe back to the stable.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's no coincidence that in the '65 sales brochure, they refer to
the cigarette lighter in this car as the 'cigar lighter' as this is
as much a mid-size luxury car as it is an unrecognized muscle car.
And this one has been working out at the gym and is a qualified
power lifter. If "Mopar or No Car" is in your vernacular, this
collection grade Fury might be in your wheelhouse. Our operators
are standing by!
