Vehicle Description
1962 Chevrolet Impala Hardtop
"Time was when elegance cost a pretty penny. But not this time! The
'62 Chevrolet has everything you could reasonably want in a car,
including a reasonable price. Things like a satiny Jet-smooth ride.
Beauty that stays beautiful. Power all the way up to 409 hp, (6
engines in all to choose from, including standard 6 and V8). All
this and more beautifully packaged with Body by Fisher finesse.
Sounds like a lot of car? That's what it is, except the price!"
From a 1962 Chevrolet print ad.
For consignment, a 1962 Chevrolet Impala hardtop showing 88,857
miles but the true miles are unknown. The 1962 Chevrolet Impala was
part of the third generation of styling first introduced the
previous year, in 1961. Chevrolet introduced the Impala in 1958 as
the top of the line Bel Air 2 door hardtop and convertible. The
Impala became a separate series in 1959, adding additional body
styles and sharing its body shells with lower end Pontiacs, Buicks,
and Oldsmobiles. Our car has lots of newer items including its
Nassau Blue interior.
Exterior
A stunning coat of two stage Nassau Blue paint covers this Impala
enhanced by the gently expanding side trim of polished borders
around a white stripe forming a spear in front. More horizontal
augmentation comes in the form of polished rocker panels which stop
abruptly at the rear wheel openings where fender skirts then
compete for your visual attention and succeed! The metallic based
rear fascia houses triple tail lights and two rise with the trunk
lid, leaving a single circle in place, purely a design element but
in 2024, it's a regulation that cars have a fixed tail light when
the trunk lid is up. Meanwhile, it all looks spectacular back here
and is underscored by a mirror-like chrome bumper and these
conditions prevail in the front where the grated grille floats over
a crystal-like bumper. 14-inch wheels are color matched and covered
with proper hubcaps featuring a bowtie emblazoned blue center. The
brightwork, glass, and paint are excellent on this car and the only
imperfections we find are a touched up scratch and some paint over
some unsmooth filler.
Interior
The good times continue to roll as we open the door to find a
wonderfully sculpted door panel of stitch square uppers accented by
buttons and a ribbed lower, split by a shiny trim piece that jogs
around the armrest. Nassau blue is used on the split bench seat
which also features a striped cloth insert with a header that picks
up on our door squares, including the buttons. This is copied on
the back seats of course, that sidewalls carry over the door design
to rear occupants and all of it is in great condition. A robin's
egg blue steering wheel fronts an instrument cluster that starts
with a tachometer on the column followed by a horizontal
speedometer over round gauges and the ever present clock. An AM
radio is embedded in a center of the dash dress plate and a trio of
aftermarket gauges have been mounted under the dash. The floor
mounted shifter is unencumbered by a base or plastic housing, it
simply rises from the floor that is covered with black and blue
loop carpet protected by correct Chevroletfloormats. The lighter
headliner is fully intact and provides a nice contrast to the blue
interior, all of which is immaculate and that includes the trunk
which has fitted mats over clean paint.
Drivetrain
Spectacular and clean, the 327ci V8 is rated at 300 horsepower and
the bay also houses new correct color wiring along with hood
springs and latch with the correct gold anodization. Our consignor
states the transmission is a Muncie M20 4-speed manual that finds
3.55 gears with Positraction in the back; however the BX stamping
on the carrier denotes a 3.08 Posi unit. Drum brakes are provided
at all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean underneath with the only surface rust appearing on
the frame in the back. A few drops of oil on the pan are present
but the underside is otherwise dry. Dual exhaust and glasspack
style mufflers before exiting. New front suspension includes coil
springs and rear suspension includes a 3 link, new coil springs,
and a panhard bar. Our consignor states that the A-frame bushings,
ball joints, and idler arm are all new.
Drive-Ability
This sweet cruiser delivers a smooth ride with noticeable power and
acceleration, straight tracking, and very good braking. We find the
clock, radio, and reverse lights not working but all other items of
operation work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
This is a showstopper. A jaw dropper. A wonderfully well sorted
'62. We could wax poetic for pages, but we'll let the photos do the
talking here. Once a common commuter car, now the belle of the ball
and ready to be asked to dance. Would you like to cut in?
Certainly, but you'll have to make your presence known by
contacting one of our car specialists today!
