Somehow, this 1949 Mercury Eight has survived all these years
without being converted into a custom lead sled - a rare feat for
these iconic coupes! As a stock survivor with a repaint, the
Berwick Green finish creates a bold presence, enhanced by loads of
chrome including smaller pieces like the vent window air
deflectors, gas door trim surround and front and rear bumper
guards. Special touches include amber fog lights and a driver-side
spotlight that are just 1940s cool and the body lines flow
gracefully over factory fender skirts, while Firestone 7.10-15 wide
whitewall tires wrap the 15-inch steel wheels for a classic
stance.
Inside, the green and tan interior maintains its vintage appeal
with checkered broadcloth and vinyl bench seating. The stylized
dashboard houses the original instrumentation panel and controls,
including the factory column shifter. A split bench seat provides
comfort for long drives, while green carpeting adds a cohesive look
throughout. The trunk offers ample storage space with correct
materials and finishes.
Under the hood, the 255 cubic inch Flathead V8 delivers strong
performance through the 3-speed manual transmission. The engine bay
retains its factory setup with an oil bath air cleaner and single
two-barrel carburetor, factory intake, generator and 6 volt
electrical system. Dual exhaust with glasspack-style mufflers
produces a muscular exhaust note and the suspension includes coil
springs and sway bar up front, with a solid axle and leaf springs
in the rear for classic handling characteristics.
