Vehicle Description
1990 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
"Corvette has been blowing the competition into the weeds since
Sebring '56. Racing technology has clearly influenced the design of
the current generation Corvette with its aircraft inspired
uniframe, 5-link independent rear suspension, 17" unidirectional
tires and Bosch anti-lock braking system. As long as there are
checkered flags, Corvettes will chase them. It's the nature of the
breed." - from the 1990 Corvette sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1990 Chevrolet Corvette couple with a title
verified 61,669 actual miles in a color made notorious by one
Prince Rogers Nelson. And just when you think you're looking at a
run of the mill red C4, take note of the side pipes, an ode to
Corvette generations of the past, that are covered in a body keyed
tunnel and add a unique, custom touch to this American sports
car.
Exterior
Bright Red is GM's rendition of well, bright red, which covers this
car like a Christmas blanket, including the hardtop. The early C4's
were angular affairs, with a flat rear fascia and inset marker
lights on a decidedly straight edged nose piece. The profile is
enhanced by the molded side pipe covers, adding some curvature to
the car, and protrusions are found in the form of sport side
mirrors and a third brake light atop the arching B-pillared
roofline. Black accents include the body side molding which
encircles the car, the rear Corvette emblem, window trim, and of
course the 40 series tires on 17-inch wheels. Side markers on the
front and rear are flush and the ever epic dual fender gills are
not just for looks, they are air extractors to dispose of extra
engine heat. Overall, the paint is in great condition. We do note
some rock chips on the exhaust end of the sidepipes.
Interior
Door panels are constructed of a variety of gray materials
including textured plastic, vinyl, and carpet panels, and
instrument base delineated with orange overlay lettering. Gray
racing style buckets draped in leather, have plenty of side
supports to hold you in while you're pulling some G's in a curve
and we note some wear on the driver's side at the ingress point as
well as some patina creasing throughout, while the passenger seat
presents in good condition. High headrests and in the bolster
electric seat adjustments sit within the driver's compartment and
are divided by a large black console housing the leather wrapped
shifter. A clean black instrument cluster is backlit in orange and
displays digital characters, the best we had in the late 80's and
early 90's! Analog gauges arch their way up to the center display
and continue the theme of orange with their needles and imprints.
In the center stack, a myriad of buttons and controls for heating,
A/C, fan and a Kenwood AM/FM/CD unit. Gray carpet covers the
floors, footwells, sidewalls, and cargo area and is in good
condition.
Drivetrain
An L98 350ci V8 is under the reverse opening hood and rated at 250
horsepower. It uses Chevrolet's touted at the time tuned port
injection and is tied to a ZF 6-speed manual transmission. Yes, a
fun stick is on board to row through gears and send the spin back
to 3.33 rear gears in a limited slip differential. Naturally, this
red rocket gets power disc brakes all around.
Undercarriage
Relatively clean underneath on an undercarriage we would call
driver quality, which for a low mileage C4 simply means there's
road dirt and general patina under here. A drop of oil on the pan
and just a bit of residual oil on the rear diff is the only non dry
spots over the terrain. A Side Effects exhaust system is in place
that routes the dual exhaust to the side. Front and rear suspension
are both independent and comprise the Corvette's complex
arrangement of fiberglass leaf springs, aluminum control arms,
trailing links, and stabilizer bar.
Drive-Ability
A comfortable and sporty cabin, simple and uncomplicated by today's
standards, awaits us as we crank the 350 to life and enjoy a
cacophony of exhaust notes to our sides from the sound chambers
provided by Side Effects. C4's have brutish power and grip and this
one is no exception. Tracking is on point and of course, handling
is off the charts. And during our short jaunt around the test loop,
all operational items on the car work as they should, even the
pop-up headlights! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
It's fast. It's red. It's low. Wide. Menacing. Legendary. And
bonus, this one won't break the bank. And we know many agree, C4's
still look darn good! And will instantly turn Main Street into
Woodward Avenue on any night of the week. Pop the targa and enjoy
some rays, and the stares of onlookers. Before you bathe in the
accolades of your decision, you have to call the mall first!
