Vehicle Description
1980 Jeep CJ7
The Expediciones De Las Americas is the most badass road trip
you've never heard of. A couple of decades after starting the
Jamboree, Mark A. Smith led an expedition of Jeeps on the longest
off-road trip in history, trekking 21,000 miles over some of the
world's most inhospitable terrain, from the southernmost tip of
Chile to the northern reaches of Alaska in 1979. In the 4x4's first
public outing, it was driven up the steps of the U.S. Capitol. When
asked what it was, the driver replied simply, "It's a jeep". Two
years later, Willys-Overland filed a trademark application.
For consignment, a 1980 CJ7, showing 47,355 miles but actual miles
are unknown. This one has been through some restoration and
includes new items such as the soft top, fender flares, tub, and
exhaust. If you're ready to get your Jeep thing on, check out this
well sorted 1980.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Resprayed in Dark Red Metallic, this little 4x4 is complemented
with black features that include the soft cab surround, the fender
flares, bumpers, and the rhino treated step bars and diamond steel
rear quarter panels. These quarter panels give our Jeep an extra
rugged look and the diamond plated front bumper plate also toughens
up this Civilian Jeep just a touch. 15-inch wheels are wrapped with
31x10.50R15LT knobby mud tires, fitting nicely behind those fender
flares and putting the CJ up for some nice ground clearance. The
paint, vinyl top and doors, and panel gaps are in great shape and
we could not find any glaring exterior flaws.
Interior
The canvas inside surface of the doors is white and shows some
water staining, but hey, it's a Jeep, i's gonna get wet! Meanwhile,
we note tall Beston bucket seats in black vinyl with smooth
bolsters and horizontaltuck and roll inserts. In the back, a small
fold down bench is ready for the family and it's in good shape as
well. Texture coated black paint floods the floors and just forward
of the driver's bucket on the side of the hump is the transfer case
range lever, and tire tread rubber mats add a place where mud is
free to roam. Upfront, a new instrument cluster resides in a
polished dash plate and there's a gap where a radio would be. You
don't get air either, but there are vent controls and defrost
available. Cupholders are present on the center console where a
padded armrest will keep your right hand within reach of the
shifter and its carbon fiber patterned handle while your left grips
the simple steering wheel, currently wrapped in a soft cover.
Drivetrain
A clean and stock appearing 2.5 liter four cylinder engine is under
the latched hood and is rated at 87 horsepower. A 2-barrel
carburetor provides the petrol and a BW/Ford SR4 4-speed manual
transmission works with a Dana 20 transfer case to deliver power to
all four wheels. Differential configuration includes a Dana 30 up
front and an AMC 20 axle out back, both with 3.54 gears. Power
brakes will make your treks more enjoyable and are front discs and
rear drums.
Undercarriage
We would classify this a driver quality with some road dirt, oil
present on the pan and transmission, some seepage at the pinion
seal, but beyond that, nothing of negative note. The single exhaust
flows through a stock style muffler and the tailpipe comes to an
end before the rear bumper. There is no catalytic converter
present. The rest of the underside in uniformly flat black and
suspension consists of leaf springs front and rear.
Drive-Ability
Upright and on high, CJ's evoke instant smiles and are just plain
fun, even when sitting still. The four banger started right up and
into first gear we went as we took this off roader on road and the
flat terrain of our test loop. The steering column and shaft are
new according to our consignor, so all's tight there, but the
shifter seems a bit sloppy. Beyond that, all functional items work
as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Every stable should have a 4x4, especially if you live in a
temperate zone, and this CJ fits the bill! Oh sure, you could daily
drive this, but you could also save it for Jeep events and off road
adventures. It's a capable little ride that's been well sorted and
the cherry on top is that it's a darn good looking rig! Let the
good times roll and get your Jeep thing on!
