For Sale: 1976 AM General DJ in STERLING, Illinois

Vehicle Description

The American General DJ-5, also known as the Jeep Dispatcher, was a two wheel drive variant of the Jeep CJ that was most well known for being the standard mail truck used by the USPS. Production started in 1955 and was handled by Willys until 1963 when Kaiser took over. In 1970 American Motors Corp (AMC) purchased operation from Kaiser and established American General who built the DJ through 1984. The current owner purchased this DJ-5 in 1997 with just over 53,000 original miles and trailered it from NM to IL where it was untouched until 2010. In 2010 it underwent a 2 year frame-off restoration during which time its original 232ci AMC I6 engine and 3 speed TorqueFlite A-727 auto tranny were both rebuilt. The engine was fit with an Offenhauser performance intake and a Holley carb with an electric choke, spark is handled by an electronic ignition with all new wiring and exhaust is handled by a set of ceramic coated headers and a 2.5 exhaust. The tranny was upgraded with a B&M Quick Silver shifter. It has new shocks and springs as well as new Wilderness Racks bumpers with a swing arm for the added spare carrier and spare on the rear and bull bars fitted with a Mile Marker PE8000 8,000lb winch up front. The rust free body was taken down to bare metal and properly prepped for a gorgeous Plum Crazy paint job which is further accented by the sweet 15” rims that are color matched and topped with a set of chrome baby moons and trim rings. It also received all new weather stripping and a new custom interior with new bucket seats, a new rear bench seat, carpeting, a headliner, A/C, power steering as well as a Pioneer BT stereo with rear 6X9 speakers. It was also upgraded with all new AutoMeter gauges which include the speedometer, tachometer and digital odometer as well as matching fuel, water, oil and voltage gauges. Also worth noting are the Cobra CB, the dual dash mounted 3 bank cigarette lighter plugs with USB ports, a Clinometer roll / pitch meter and dual cup holders. All said and done over $30,000 was spent on the restoration as the sellers did not restore it with the intent of selling it. Shortly after it was completed the owner’s husband passed away. As a result it has barely been driven which is why it is now being made available for sale. This is undoubtedly the nicest DJ-5D in existence and available at a steal of a price so if you like what you see don’t wait until it is too late to contact us!
