This 1970 Monte Carlo SS represents one of only 3,823 genuine Super
Sports, and don't forget, this was the first year for the Monte
Carlo name. And if that wasn't special enough, the included factory
buildsheet notes this was first sold/delivered to GM's Research
Laboratories. So was GM checking in on the initial quality of this
new model? Did they prototype some new features on this car? We
don't know all of what they did at the Tech Center, but that kind
of mystery certainly makes for a unique classic. We do know that GM
ordered a loaded example for themselves that has all the best
luxuries, numbers-matching big block power, and rarely-seen
features like the lamp monitors.
Inside, the saddle-colored interior showcases luxury and
performance in equal measure. Bucket seats with vinyl upholstery
provide excellent support, while the horseshoe shifter rises from
the center console. Power windows and locks offer convenience at
your fingertips. The tilt steering column puts everything within
reach, and both lap and shoulder belts reflect the era's advancing
safety features. The factory rear defrost and AM radio round out
the cockpit's impressive array of options.
The matching-numbers 454 cubic inch V8 delivers raw American muscle
through a Holley 4-barrel carburetor. A TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission channels the power smoothly to the rear wheels. The
factory dual exhaust with Super Turbo mufflers produces an
authoritative sound. Power steering and power brakes maintain
control, while the suspension system featuring trailing arms with
air shocks, coil springs, and sway bar in the rear delivers
excellent road manners.
