Vehicle Description
Cruisin Classics is pleased to present to you this 1968 Buick GS400
convertible. This great-looking Buick is a rather rare sight, as
only 2,454 GS400 convertibles were made in '68. The trim tag tells
us that this car was born with Maroon Metallic paint and a Black
interior and it's still wearing the same colors today. The current
paint job is a respray in the original color and it is in good
driver quality. Up front, you'll find a non-functional hood scoop
trimmed with chrome that extends forward to the hood's lip to frame
"BUICK" block lettering at the front edge. Beneath the hood is a
chrome-framed black egg-crate grille with "GS" badging flanked by
dual side-by-side headlights. Down low is a bright chrome bumper
with integrated turn signals. The sides of this Buick feature a
swoopy descending design crease that makes this car look like it's
going fast while it's sitting still. Some bright touches like
chrome window trim, dual chrome side mirrors and door handles,
wheel lip molding, and faux fender vents with GS400 badges above
them accent the side view. Wipers are hidden away underneath the
rear of the hood for a clean look. The black convertible top with a
glass rear window is in excellent condition, with no rips or tears.
The top is power-operated, but it currently needs a little nudge on
the passenger side rear to start going up (then it finishes the
operation as it should). This Gran Sport's stance is perfect as it
sits atop a set of Magnum 500 wheels with Olds center caps wrapped
in Firehawk Indy 500 white letter tires. Around the back is a
tapered trunk with outstretched edges and a concave center that
provides a very unique look. The top of the trunk lid is adorned
with trim pieces that mimic the theme from the hood, with the two
lines framing a GS400 badge at the bottom center. Below is another
gleaming bumper with integrated tail lights and a hidden gas fill
behind the license plate holder.
Under the hood is a tidy stock-looking black engine bay with a
working courtesy light. At the center is a bright red 400ci block
topped with a stock intake and a 4-barrel carburetor. Also atop the
V-8 is a set of correct black valve covers with "Buick 400-4"
decals and a chrome-topped air cleaner. These Buick 400 V-8s were
factory-rated at 340hp and 440 lb/ft of torque with 10.25:1
compression, though it's generally known that they underestimated
the horsepower for insurance reasons. The V-8 is mated up to a
4-speed manual transmission with a 10-bolt rear end. Other
highlights under the hood include power steering, working A/C
(originally a factory A/C car!), and cast exhaust manifolds that
lead back to a true dual exhaust that sounds fantastic. Stopping
power comes from front disc and rear drum brakes with a newer power
booster and dual reservoir.
When you open the driver's door, courtesy lights come on to
illuminate a very sharp black interior. The door panels wear bright
horizontal trim over black vinyl with GS400 badging. The driver's
door features power window controls, an interior toggle for the
side mirror, and a crank for the vent window. While the power
windows work fine going down, the rear passenger window requires
help to go back up. Black vinyl bucket seats in very good condition
welcome you inside for a drive, and the rear bench offers plenty of
room to bring along extra passengers. Just ahead of the front seats
in the center of the floor is a black shift console with bright
trim, a patterned badge, a factory tachometer (inaccurate), and a
dog-leg Hurst shifter with a black ball and a black rubber boot.
Ahead of the driver is a black-rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel with a
working Buick horn button on a tilt column. The black crack-free
dash is home to a wide 120mph speedometer flanked by a working
clock and warning lights for oil, temp, and gen. The odometer reads
1,875 miles and although that is actual per the title, we don't
believe that it is truly the accurate mileage. Beneath the
speedometer on the lower panel are controls for the lights, the
working 2-speed wipers, a lighter, and the climate controls. The
climate controls blow cold A/C and hot heat, but the air only blows
through the defrost and floor vents, not the dash vents (possibly a
bad actuator). At the center of the dash is a factory Buick
push-button AM/FM radio that cranks out your cruising tunes. Ahead
of the passenger in the dash is an empty glovebox. Underfoot is a
nice black hook-and-loop carpet. Back in the trunk is a carpeted
mat, a black boot cover for when the top is down, and a full
matching spare wheel/tire.
This 1968 Buick GS400 convertible is a rare gem with tons of appeal
and good looks. Its unique design makes it stand out from the crowd
wherever it goes. With power brakes, power steering, power windows,
a big V-8, a 4-speed manual, and cold A/C it sure checks a ton of
boxes on any car enthusiast's list! Give us a call today and make
this beauty your own before someone else snatches it up!
