Vehicle Description
Looking for one of those imported Land Cruisers that Toyota did not
sell in the U.S. when new? We have one at MotoeXotica Classic Cars.
A rarely seen stateside FZJ75 high top that comfortably seats 12
people.
While the United States and North America have been markets for
many Land Cruisers through the decades, not all models were sold
here.
This example has benefited from a body off nut and bolt
restoration.. During the process, the chassis was completely
stripped, sandblasted, repainted and reassembled. The body was
extensively repaired to remove dents and fittment is superb. The
new paint consists of polyurethane underbody protection, epoxy
primer, and Standox single-stage paint in Toyota matching white,
(code 45).
This SUV rolls on Kumho Crugen light truck tires, each one mounted
on a new, OEM 17-inch steel wheel. The tires and wheels are all in
very good order. The braking system was refreshed - master
cylinder, front pads, rear shoes, rotors and drums. The rotors and
drums have been resurfaced and are within OEM specifications.
The drivetrain was put back together using new components, seals
and gaskets. All items were replaced with OEM parts where possible.
Underhood is carburated IFZ-F veteran straight six-cylinder motor,
here enlarged to 4.5L. It is a DOHC unit, with 24 valves, with
narrow-angle overhead camshafts. It puts out 240 horsepower and 300
lbs-ft of torque to get you out of most off-road situations. It was
used primarily in SUVs because of its large displacement,
smoothness, ruggedness and torque. The 5 speed gear box shifts
smoothly with 1st and 2nd synchros slightly off.
The interior was not forgotten, either. New brown vinyl upholstery
has been fitted to the front buckets and rear jump seats. This
vehicle can easily seat eight people and up to 11 folks. There is
coordinated newer brown carpeting, with inner door and wall panels
covered in matching vinyl with a diamond pattern. The dashboard
pad, instrument panel and speedometer bezel have all been replaced.
Door mechanisms are new and permit easy movement of the windows and
door locks.
The side window glass is original and bears some blemishes from
being in a desert environment earlier in its life. There are
non-factory tints on the sliding side rear windows. Windshield is
in very good condition. The rear doors also bear tint and open
ambulance-style. Other restoration facets include all new door and
window seals and a new headliner.
The 70 / 75 series Toyota Land Cruiser took over from the 40 / 45
series of workhorse four-wheel drives in 1984. The styling
maintained a family resemblance to the 40 / 45 series but became
more angular. The 70 / 71 series was the short-wheelbase (SWB), the
73 / 74 was the medium-wheelbase (MWB) and the 75 / 78 was the
long-wheelbase (LWB). The latter came as cab-chassis/utility with a
"panelled" tray (pickup), and "troop carrier" hard-top (HT) or
commonly called a "Troopy."
Originally, model numbers 70 through 74 referred to the two-door
short- and medium-wheelbase versions. These were the successors of
the 40 Series, such as the FJ40. Model numbers 75, 78 and 79
referred to the long-wheelbase version, which was available in
pickup and two-door troop carrier models. These were the successors
of the less-well known long-wheelbase 40 Series, such as the FJ45.
Models 77 (1990-1999 JDM) and 76 are a semi-long wheelbase
four-door wagon in a few markets.
As with all Land Cruisers, the letters at the beginning of the
model number designate the engine of the vehicle. Common engines in
the 70 series include the 3F petrol engine (e.g., the FJ70), the
22R petrol engine (e.g. the RJ70/73 Bundera), the 2H diesel engine
(e.g., the HJ75), the 1FZ petrol engine (e.g., the
FZJ70/71/73/74/75/76/78/79), the 1PZ diesel engine (e.g., the
PZJ70/73/77), the 1HZ diesel engine (e.g., the
HZJ70/71/73/74/75/76/77/78/79), the 1HD diesel engine (e.g. the
HDJ78/79), and most recently, the 1VD diesel engine (e.g., the
VDJ76).
If you're a Toyota fan, particularly a Toyota truck/SUV fan, you
will not want to miss out on this Land Cruiser that was never
available for sale in the U.S. 30 years ago. Stop by MotoeXotica
Classic Cars today to check it out before the others do and it
finds a new home elsewhere.
