Vehicle Description
1974 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
"We know what you feel. We know what it's like to possess, (and be
possessed by), a car so exciting to look at that it makes the scene
wherever it stops. Or turns heads wherever it goes. And we know the
feeling of a friendly wave of the hand, (or a flick of the lights),
when you meet another Corvette on the road, of being part of a
whole new and exciting lifestyle. We know because we've been there.
The '74 isn't a totally new Corvette, just better". From the 1974
sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1974 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a title
verified 100,636 actual miles, a wild custom interior, a numbers
matching four speed transmission and a non original 454ci V8.
Exterior
Our consignor states the Classic White paint job is "relatively
new" and covers the car like a streamlined Stormtrooper. The
classic lines send rounded fenders over the wheels and a shoulder
line that is articulated on the door to house the wonderfully
designed door handle that is horizontal and flush. The urethane
tail piece of the car is rounded and includes cylindrical ports for
the four taillights and a license plate cove. Just below it,
tailpipes protrude and face the ground. In front, the fiberglass
blends into a shark-like nose with hidden headlights in front of
the slightly raised hood. White highlights the fender vents and the
15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels look great, wearing tires with an
early 2022 date code. Imperfections include some extra clear coat
that has dried to drops under the roll pan and some paint runs in
the same area, a crack in the paint above a wheel opening, paint
run near the vent, areas of orange peel, and some other uneven
areas along with a notable crack in the windshield.
Interior
Hold onto your hats. We start with unassuming and standard door
panels in red plastic and vinyl with an upturned attitude for
ergonomics typical in Vettes of this era. Slight patinaed, but
overall in good condition. Then we turn to the bucket seats which
are completely covered in a pattern we can best describe as
"groovy," perhaps fitting for an early 70's vintage, with almost
psychedelic shapes and geometric patterns. The leather is in good
condition and is matched by a center console cover. A 3 spoke
grippy steering wheel fronts a basic dash with an instrument
cluster of two, augmented by the center stack's array of five
gauges and an AM/FM radio. Along with the map pockets in front of
the passenger, it's all in very good condition. Down on the center
console, we have the vent controls and the joystick, a metal
knobbed shifter in black leather boot, showing quite a bit of
patina. The red loop carpet below shows usage and that coverage in
the cargo area is faded.
Drivetrain
The reverse opening hood reveals a spotless 454ci big boy with a
bright orange block and even brighter yellow wires, along with
chrome valve covers. It is fueled by a rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor
and the car is put into motion by a numbers matching Muncie M21
4-speed manual transmission which sends power to the rear axle with
3.08 gears and Positraction. America's great sports car gets power
disc brakes at all four corners and the calipers and pads are
newer, per our consignor. Our consignor also states the radiator,
fan, belts, and water pump are new.
Undercarriage
Clean and bone dry underneath with surface rust reserved for the
exhaust pipes only. Those pipes run the length of the car and enter
clean, newer MagnaFlow mufflers before spilling out into the world
through those downturned tailpipes. Coil spring suspension is up
front and Corvette's complex rear suspension is present and capped
off with transverse leaf springs.
Drive-Ability
The big 454 roars to life and we move the shifter to number one and
ease off the clutch to roll this sleek white machine onto the test
loop where of course, acceleration was on tap, handling was
excellent, and tracking is near perfect on these fresh tires. Some
things were noted as non functional including the heater blower,
the wipers, the clock, the reverse lights, and the horn. All other
functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Lightweight car, big engine, clean interior. That's a recipe for
some fun roads ahead. This is a fine example of a C3 in stunning
white paint, a stick shifter, and grease free mechanics. And don't
forget about those removable tops! Now you're cruising in style AND
in the open air. Your groovy chariot awaits, table for two, smiles
are free.
