Vehicle Description
Cruisin Classics is proud to present to you today this gorgeous
1958 Oldsmobile Super 88. This Oldsmobile has unmistakable styling
that will turn heads everywhere and enough chrome to make a 57
BelAir or 59 Cadillac blush with envy! The body of this big beauty
is dressed in deep glossy red paint with a white top and rear
quarter accents - all in high driver-level condition. Bright trim
begins up front with a large chrome "Rocket" hood ornament that is
flanked by dual side-by-side headlights set in chrome bezels that
wrap around the sides onto the fenders, forming a spear that
extends most of the way down the doors. The center of the spears
feature "Super 88" badging - the only badging to be found on the
car. Beneath the headlights and hood rocket is a chrome framed
horizontal bar grille and an enormous mirror-finish chrome bumper
with integrated turn indicator lights. Originally, the grill would
have had an Oldsmobile crest badge at the center but it has since
been deleted. Also removed are the "OLDSMOBILE" block letters that
would have graced the front lip of the hood when new. Thick pieces
of chrome trim border the wrap-around windshield and just ahead of
it you'll find chrome air vents on either side and bright wiper
arms. Chrome trim continues on from the windshield to frame all of
the windows and provide an accent as the roof slopes down to the
C-pillars. The upper body line of the car takes a sweetheart dip at
the rear of the doors then curves back upward with a chrome rail
that continues all of the way down the rear fins to the insanely
cool rocket tip tunnel tail-lamps. Oldsmobile took these already
over-the-top taillight assemblies to a whole different level by
using the one on the driver's side to conceal the gas fill -
brilliant design! Beneath the fins on the rear quarter panels are
four horizontal chrome spears with a white painted background that
brings the white from the roof down onto the body for a beautiful
accent. Originally there would have been Oldsmobile crest badges
ahead of this section but they have been removed. Bringing the
whole side-view of the car together into perfect harmony is a set
of gleaming chrome wire wheels with faux knock-off center caps all
wrapped in Silvertown wide white-wall radial tires. Stunning design
work continues at the rear of the car where you'll find an
oversized continental kit with another gigantic chrome bumper (with
extensions!) surrounding the base. The spare is encased in a red
and chrome cover with a release bar behind it that allows access to
the trunk. Like the rest of the car, the trunk lid has been
completely de-badged for a clean, slick look. Peeking out from
under the corners of the bumper are a set of chrome Magnaflow
exhaust tips that emit a fantastic rumble.
Under the big hood is a very tidy and presentable engine bay
illuminated by a courtesy light. At the center is a gold-painted
350ci Chevrolet V-8 dressed to look like an Olds Rocket engine with
"Oldsmobile Rocket" decals on the gold valve covers and on the
black Oldsmobile bat-wing air cleaner. The 350 is topped off with
stock heads and an intake manifold with an Edelbrock 1406 600cfm
4-barrel carburetor. The fuel pump has been upgraded to an electric
unit and the ignition has been upgraded to HEI. Other highlights
under the hood include power steering, power brakes (drums on all 4
corners), a newer radiator, and a Sanden compressor that powers the
working Vintage Air system. Exhaust flows from cast manifolds
through glass pack-style mufflers to exit the rear with a heavenly
sound. The 350 V-8 is mated up to a TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission (with an external cooler) that puts power to the
pavement via a GM limited-slip rear axle.
It should come as no surprise that the interior of this Super 88 is
every bit as stylish and cool as the exterior. When you open the
door you're greeted by an opulent red, white, and black interior
with loads of eye-popping chrome touches - all illuminated by
working courtesy lights. The correct-looking door panels are a
blend of red, black, and white vinyl with bright trim, window
cranks, and armrests. The comfortable bench seats look recently
recovered in a mix of red and white vinyl with black red patterned
fabric - they just beg you to hop inside and go for a cruise.
Overhead is a tight white vinyl headliner and underfoot is a good
quality black carpet. As nice as everything is though, it is the
breath-taking multi-level red and chrome dash that really steals
the show. The top portion of the dash is red steel with a
vertically-ribbed aluminum back-plate and a clock at the center
(inop.). The lower section features a chrome panel that stretches
from side to side and serves as home to all of the instruments and
gauges, as well as a decorative section on the passenger side.
Directly ahead of the driver is an arching 120mph speedometer with
warning lights for oil, gen, hot, and cold as well as a gas gauge
(inop.) that follows the curve above. Beneath the speedometer is an
odometer that reads 59,057 miles, a "Safety Sentinel switch, and a
gear shift indicator. The Safety Sentinal switch allows you to set
a marker on the speedometer that will alert you with a light and a
buzzer if you exceed that speed (we have not tested this feature
for operation). To the left is a lever for the wipers (inop.), a
switch for the lights, an emergency brake light, and heater
controls (inop.). The wipers are now controlled by an underdash
knob to the left of the column and the heater is now controlled by
the Vintage Air system. To the right are the "Summer Ventilation"
system (inop. - replaced by Vintage Air), key ignition, cigarette
lighter, and a Retro-Sound-style AM/FM/Aux stereo. The stereo
sounds good as it plays through speakers in the rear package tray
but the volume knob works intermittently. Under the chrome section
of the dash to the right of the driver is another red-painted steel
section that contains the ashtray and a wide glovebox. Inside the
glovebox, you'll find a working Autometer fuel gauge and an
auxiliary cord for the stereo. Mounted underneath the center of the
dash is the Vintage Air system that cranks out cold A/C and hot
heat with a strong fan through 4 vents. The driver is treated to a
bright white steering wheel with 3 chrome spokes and a working horn
at the center. The wheel is mounted to a fixed column which also
has a shifter for the automatic transmission and a blinker lever.
Back at the rear of the car is an empty trunk, save for a
factory-style jack in case of a flat tire.
