Vehicle Description
The big news at Chevrolet in 1929 was a new overhead-valve
six-cylinder engine-the "Cast Iron Wonder" that would remain in
production for 35 years. Chevy's fours were previously called
"National"; the new sixes were given the appellation
"International." Although Ford's Model A, some $75 cheaper, outsold
it, within two years the more sophisticated Chevrolet was out in
front and stayed there, with few exceptions, for the rest of the
century. Nineteen-thirty brought hydraulic shock absorbers, some
minor changes to the windshield and instrument panel, plus yet
another series name: Universal. There were ten body styles, priced
from $495 to $685, nearly overlapping Ford territory.
The 1930 Universal Series AD 2 Passenger Coupe here is a running
and driving example that has a well preserved core structure. It
features its overhead valve 6-cylinder engine, 3 speed
transmission, spoke wheels, rear mounted spare, luggage
compartment, front visor, etc. The paint is older and is flaking
off certain areas, the driver side glass is not intact, the body is
all steel, the interior appears correct. The car runs and drives
like a 1930 Chevrolet. It is a clean palette for any decision.
