We are the third owners of this stunning vehicle, which has a remarkable story. Originally purchased by a doctor in Louisville, Kentucky, it was a gift for his wife. The car boasts a beautiful red exterior with a white top and red interior.
In 1962, the doctor added air conditioning, with ducts and a unit located in the back deck and under the seats. In the 1980s, he invested in an off-frame restoration, added an AM/FM cassette radio, and installed true wire wheels.
So how did it end up here? The doctor had a friend who owned a towing and recovery/body shop nearby. On nice days, the 6'4" doctor would drive the Thunderbird with the top down. His friend always expressed interest in buying it, and when the doctor could no longer drive, he sold it to him.
In 2013, for the new owner’s birthday, his sons had the engine rebuilt and resealed the transmission. However, that’s when the original air conditioning stopped working. Over the years, the new owner enjoyed the car at shows and gatherings. After his passing, his remaining son was reluctant to sell, but with too many classic cars to manage, he eventually decided to part with it. They added another aftermarket air conditioning unit before we purchased it in 2017. The paint has some patina, with chips and minor dents. The car has not been wrecked since we owned it, but it’s hard to tell about its earlier history.
What We've Done:
The car retains its original engine, and along with the installed radio, we also have the original Town and Country radio. We believe we still have the original 4-barrel Holley carburetor and the original aftermarket air conditioning unit, as well as the original steel wheels with hubcaps. Numerous extra parts are included, such as new portals and other items deemed unnecessary at this time. Has the telescoping steering wheel, power windows, power seat and automatic transmission.
I have a repair manual and invest in Gil Baumgartner restoration documentation for tips and tricks once you figure out how they are put together. We use Hills Thunderbird for all parts, and Marvin has provided invaluable technical support for issues like the power steering leak.
What Needs Attention:
This car is stored inside, covered year-round in its own designated spot, and in the winter, it’s kept in a car bubble.
Why We're Selling: At 67 years old, this car loves to be driven, but our time and other hobbies have taken away the attention it deserves. It’s a stunning specimen that wins awards at local car shows for its charm and character, bringing crowds wherever it parks. Just before the hurricane rolled through, we enjoyed a 75-mile cruise, indulged in some ice cream, and made wonderful memories for us and all the were asking the questions. This car drives passion for future generations!
