""I didn't want to lose the style or character of the original
car,"" he says. ""I never wanted a full-blown 'Pro Tourer' with a
roll cage and track suspension; I simply wanted to make the car
more drivable and to run with the modern performance cars"" That
was the goal of the previous long term owner and builder Brian
Thomson (of Thomson Automotive in Wixom, Michigan): It had to be
able to be driven by anyone who could fog a mirror and had to
""idle like a kitten.""
Brian and his shop are closely tied to the hot rodding division
within GM, so he decided to use mostly off-the-shelf GM Performance
Parts components as well as a few of his own parts from Thomson
Automotive. The only departures are Dyers rods and Diamond pistons
that deliver 9.0:1 compression. Those swing from a GMPP 454 LSX
crankshaft inside a CP LSX tall-deck Aluminum block. The heads are
GM six-bolt LS7 units CNC-ported by Thomson Automotive, and topped
with the LS9 supercharger setup from the ZR1 Corvette. A Thomson
blower snout is used for eliminating the restrictive kink of the
stock Corvette part, and a smaller pulley has been fitted for
upping the boost to 15psi! The throttle body is a 90mm unit from an
LS7, and the fuel system utilizes Twin in-tank Camaro ZL1 fuel
pumps, 85-1b/hr fuel injectors and the VaporWorx pulse-width
modulated fuel-control system is all controlled by a Holley
Dominator ECU
A custom ground camshaft is the key to a smooth, low-rpm idle
that's ideal for daily driver-quality cruising! Also, the
intercooler is chilled by two Ron Davis air-to-water radiators
behind the grille, adding power and helping it all run on
92-octane.
Behind the wheel, this car is tame like a stocker one minute and
absurdly fast the next. Power is sent through a Built GM 4L80E
Automatic transmission with a Dynamic converter. Ideal for managing
this kind of power all while maintaining the cushy cruising
capabilities for when you go to get the ice cream! The overdrive
trans and its lockup converter helped get 18 mpg on the Hot Rod
Power Tour(r)!
