1972 Continental is a one year only car, and undoubtedly the very best year of the mark IV.
Made before the 5 mile an hour front impact bumpers, emission controls, smaller engine and the reworked rear end.
The Mark IV arrived in 1972 resurrected after the Mark III in 1969. The 19ft long Lincoln Continental Mark IV coupe became arguably the most flamboyant of all Lincoln models.
The 1972 Lincoln Continental Mark IV is 228 inches long, with a 120-inch wheelbase.
This Lincoln features the “Continental spare” in the trunk lid as well as hidden headlamps and the de rigueur Rolls-aping grille.
The Mark IV tips the scales at well over two and a half tons. This was an era when Ford would advertise their cars as having “road-hugging weight,” and apparently none hugged tighter than the big Lincolns.
All that excess weight needed a big motor to move it. Under the flight deck… er, hood lies a 460 CID V8, still with a four-barrel Edelbrock carb. Factory rated at 212 horsepower (this was the first year that manufacturers were required to report net) and was backed up by a C6 three-speed automatic.
The only update is a reworked exhaust. Other than that, it seems to be just how the factory and Lee Iacocca intended it to be.
The car’s paint is Gold Moondust Metallic and that’s matched to a dark brown leather interior with tufted upholstery and lots of fake woodgrain on the dash and doors.
At some point someone tried to steal the big Lincoln. To repair the damage the steering column and ignition has been replaced. The column just needs to be painted to match the old one.
Aside from all that, the cabin is very nice and comfortable, and the car has functional A/C and a sunroof, both rarities on American cars of this age.
This Mark IV presently has everything in my name; including a clean AZ title, also carries AZ insurance and wears AZ tags valid until 2027.
I purchased this car in Las Vegas NV I have now owned this car for since December 2021. My heart is with vintage American autos. I buy them as a hobby, and the experience.
The car is located in Dolan Springs AZ about 1 hour outside of Las Vegas.
I'm not a shady used car salesman or a stealer ship or a car flipper. I'm just a fellow enthusiast who buys what I can afford. I buy cars to drive, and keep, I don't have a museum. Like all my classic cars they all will forever need something fixed. I've learned to not be fooled, cry once; never again. I drive them on the weekends, tinker with them, I enjoy having and looking at them. I pick up my kids at school with them and drive my family around in them in a very small town of about 800 people. Although I have replaced many parts, there all far from perfect. At about 53 years old this Lincoln Continental is now a true survivor, with now very few of these automobile icons are still on the road. Fewer still are the number of road-worthy units in such condition as this one.
The good: :)
This car will “start right up,” drive, stop, and run “smooth and quiet.” the engine does not overheat, it is very responsive, has lots of power. It sounds awesome and runs as it should. The transmission shifts smooth, has all its gears, and has clean fluid; the electrical and wiring system are excellent with no parasitic shorts, or charging issues. The fuel system is clean, good gas tank with no fuel leaks, minimum rust, straight and solid frame, the floorboards, rocker arms, and under the doors are all there. Cold air, new exhaust system, new carburetor, rebuilt engine, new vinal top, one re paint the headlights go up and down properly, nice looking trunk with original spare tire, nice over all interior, good seals around the windows, doors and trunk. All the power windows operate, doors trunk, and hood all open and close properly.
The bad: :(
The Cartier clock does not work, the speedometer doesn't work, the fuel gauge floats, the stereo does not work, the drivers inside door handle needs repair, one new crack in the dashboard, the hood ordainment is broken, the paint is fair shows dents, sun fading and scratches. The headlight switch is missing its knob, the steering column needs to be painted, the horn does not work, has some rust pitting on the bottom driver's fender, the sunroof does not function, the rear windows move slow, the brake lights are not functioning, the turn signal switch needs replacement. The driver's seat shows a wear, the driver's door panel is loose. The rear bumper is dented. The cars air conditioning system works but has some vacuum leaks. The odometer is not working, the windshield has a small crack
The watch list: ?
The engine runs really great, starts right up, and will literally smoke the tires all day. It runs really smooth, and quiet and has clean 10/40 oil but has a very slight tick once at operating temp; it hasn't got any better or worse since I've owned the car and is not noticeable when cold.
The front suspension system is functional but is showing some considerable wear and tear on the control arm bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends, the cars pulls to the left a bit, but no play in the wheels or funny noises.
The brakes are functional, no leaks, no funny noises, the pedal is fair it will stop. I'm sure it could use a new master cylinder at best, and a full brake pad and caliper inspection. I've never greased the front bearings, but they seem ok no signs of leaks or funny noises or play.
The u joints seem ok, but I've never greased or inspected them, the rear axle fluid has never been touched by me or inspected but is quiet and shows no leaks.
The power steering hose leaks a little, the transmission has a very small leak; I'm talking a quart every 2 years, I'm not sure yet where its coming from. It leaks a little oil, the cooling system is functional antifreeze is green with no visible leaks, the thermostat and radiator cap are a couple years old, as it goes for the radiator who knows when or if the copper radiator was last acid dipped. The hoses are a bit soft; fan clutch is old but functional. The heater core is leaking a small amount of coolant, the belts are fair, showing some cracking. The tires are shot, they show heavy dry rotting. The steering column rag joint is cracking and needs replacement. Some of the instrument cluster dummy lights do not function, maybe a couple burned-out bulbs?
