Vehicle Description
1979 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
Typically, after a celebration, life returns to a comfortable
baseline. Not for Corvette, not this year. We saw in 1977, the
500,000th Corvette roll off production, and in 1978 we celebrated
the Silver Anniversary. This year, in 1979, Corvette sold over
50,000 Corvettes for the first time in history, and 1979 still
holds the record for most Corvettes sold in a year! In addition to
surpassing production numbers, the 1979 Corvette was the first to
sell for over $10,000. The price hike didn't deter Corvette
enthusiasts, as evidenced by the numbers.
For consignment, a low mileage title verified 63,386 mile 1979
Corvette. This example has been treated to a later model rebuilt
350ci V8 thatour consignor states makes 300hp,(although no
paperwork is accompanying this claim), a fresh repaint, updated
headlights motors and freshly reconditioned upholstery. It has
painted T-tops and is bathed in white with a blazing red
interior.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws

Exterior
Gone are any evidence of chrome edges with any bumpers or grille
surrounds. Now the black painted horizontal ribbed grille is
surrounded by Classic White neoprene which flares outward at the
fenders and has hidden headlights just above. These then run in
front of the forward hinged hood, and sporting shark gill vents on
either side of the quarters, and a polished stainless steel rocker
trimming. Classic White T tops are near perfect, and certainly have
no leaky seals. Sculpted doors with handles that push down on top
near their sills are truly aerodynamic and look great as well. The
deeply tinted greenhouse curved glass runs into a small rear deck
at the top of the now rounded rear of the car, and still maintains
the deep set round taillights. This neoprene bumper tail
lighthousing has dual chrome tips peeking out from underneath and
it just holds the beautiful line it came from the factory with.
15-inch slotted deep dish wheels add a nice contrast to the white
fiberglass which presents well in a repaint having 3 coats of clear
but does show orange peel, runs, areas of heavy application and
paint areas that extend past the body into the gaps.
Interior
Definitely one of the major highlights of this car, we see smooth
shiny supple stitched red leather covering the door panels on the
uppers, and utilizing deep red carpeting on the bottoms. A red
highlight of wrap around leather is on the door pull and shiny
handles and toggles are within the red field. Turning our attention
to the inside, a rush of warmth wafts over my eyes with a red dash
top that has black rectangular inserts for the gauges. The central
dash is black as well and houses a cluster of 5 gauges, the radio,
and temp sliders on the console panel. All else is red and in
beautiful condition. Not to leave out the steering wheel, which is
of rally design and uses red leather rimming which is padded, and
shiny central spokes. The center console is in black and red houses
the knob topped automatic shift lever, some window toggles and the
handbrake. In step with the dash are thin lightweight padded
bolstered and inserts all in red leather high back bucket form.
These are holding their shape and padding very nicely but do show
some age wear and cracking of the leather. Red carpeting is
flooding the interior with a slight fade appearing in the back. The
T-tops do not appear to show any leakage inside.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood and more applause is necessary as we gaze upon a
lightly patined mill and bay, complete with ribbed cast valve
coverings, and supple hoses and black wiring throughout. 350 cubes
on this 1980-1985 4 barrel version V8 making a consignor stated
300hp, and a TH350 3-speed automatic is on back. The rear axle
weighs in at 3.36 Posi rear axle. A nice presentation under the
flip forward hood.
Undercarriage
Maintaining the same driver quality condition as the topside, we
note some slight surface rust but overall mostly black painted
steel which is showing a bit of road dirt. Independent SLA coil
spring suspension is on front and in the back is a fully
independent suspension with a transverse leaf spring. True dual
exhaust with stock style mufflers, sans catalytic converters, in
good condition is also seen.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and very smooth idle, and after a warm up it was
off to the test track. Here it has nice smooth acceleration, good
solid braking and excellent handling. The interior is plenty
colorful and super snazzy to be within. A plethora of frowns made
their presence known during my time behind the wheel and consist of
the AC not functioning, the heater blower not blowing, the left
headlight not rotating up, the right rear tail lighting not
illuminating for driving, signaling, or braking, the speedometer
was bouncy, the radio and clock did not function and the tachometer
did not keep track of rpms. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
A looker with a peppy engine and even more beautiful interior with
two tone black and red interior throughout. A clean example needing
some TLC on the operations front, but is ready to turn the key and
go! Then pop off the T top and breathe in some success when carving
through the back roads in your 1979 Corvette. Please remember to
fasten your seatbelt and hold on to the jersey bar if you are the
passenger.
